OK, I found this several years ago at an antique store. It has little specks of paint all over it, and I have always suspected it was purchased by an artist, who never got around to carving it. I had it analyzed by X-ray diffraction just to confirm, and it is 100%, positively, nephrite jade.
It is not the most beautiful jade in the world, but it is big; it weighs about 16 lbs. Not a bad buy for $100, although I have no idea what massive jade sells for. After all, it comes in big boulders...
As a geologist, I like to have it around just to look at! The color is not as blue as it looks in most of the photos--the close-ups are the closest to the actual color. I did oil the surface to make the color stand out for the close-ups...

How interesting! I don't really know what I expected to see, but the colouration reminds me of the rocks decoration on porcelain.

Heavy for the low price and worth more than you paid for it.
Has some reasonable good colour with lower grade mixed or striped in.
Your right though I think an artist had something in mind for it. Although exactly what I am unsure. It's got a metal band so that maybe all he was going to do with it.
As I am not a carver as such anything is possible here etc.

You can research the prices for nephrite online. The difficult thing would be to finde the value for the excact same quality of spinach green nephrite. Alternative you can send an email to the people who mine nephrite jade in Canada and ask for their opinion. Their field also yield mainly spinach jade. Your piece look like it could be canadian.

I think you did a great buy at $100
Thanks, All. Avatar, it does look like some of the pieces of Canadian jade. It isn't as good as alot of the stuff on the site--too much pale material. But I definitely did fine on the price!
My first thought was that it was Canadian, and that is probably right. But I found some Russian jade that looked pretty similar, too. So I am not positive of the source.
It is a nice blocky chunk, and I am very happy with it. It is a keeper!

I have also seen a lot of Russian jade that resembles your piece.
In the end it does not really matter where it comes from because its average quality. More to the point is that it's real.
What do you plan on doing with it. As in display purposes I am asking. Leaving it like that or perhaps utilizing it somehow?

It reminds me of a piece of jade from Siberia that I purchased years ago for knife handles. I sent the piece to China for carving and polishing. A local silversmith assembled the dinner and dessert knives to go with my Victorian silver fiddle & thread service.
I like it the way it is. I did take a few minutes to clean off the paint smears. But other than that, I will just keep it on a shelf. How many people have a 16 lb chunk of jade?
