Two small inlaid lacquer plates with silver rims…,I just love the boys celebrating!
I think these are late Ming! Haven’t had a chance to look them up, but the wood core under the lacquer feels well made and kiln dried (no cracks in the lacquer).
Better still, when I asked how much, the guy just gave them to me! Guess he didn’t appreciate what he had. There’s a lesson to be learned somewhere in this story.
As a gift they should not be sold. Buf it's ultimately up to you.
They are very nice I must write. Is it mother of pearl?
I am not so lucky with regard to receiving gifts etc. Except for the mandarin jade ducks made from jade and late Ming.
They were are gift from a friend in Canada and hence not to be sold.

Interesting pieces. I haven't come across anything like that from China, yet, as far as I remember! My first thought was Sumida Gawa, but they are more refined looking and lacking the orange.
May we see the bases please?

Im not sure of their value in the collectors market. Lacquer objects are collected by a very small group.
The mother of pearl is quite blue-green, so I think it’s from abalone or something similar.
The bodies could be coral.
@julia We are friendly, but by no means friends… I don’t even know his name, sadly. I’ve got to fix that… starting to be a strange habit for me.
I’ve seen plain lacquer plates with silver rims, but never seen them inlaid. It reminds me of Ming inlaid boxes which are quite rare.
I think since one plate is smaller than the other, they were part of a larger set of nesting plates.
I can post pics of the bottoms later today when the sun is up.

The more I look at them the more I like them.
Tried to find similar from a trusted site. Only found MOP. Not with coral. The brown section, (not 100%), I am not sure what it is.
I think it's got huge potential for either late Ming or early Qing period. It's all very interesting. I know coral jewelry was very popular during the last days of the Qing tight through to the 1920's. But I think your plates/dishes are much earlier.
Can't wait to see the backs one day.
My friend Ben Janssens has had a few MOP on lacquer in the past with silver rims/other.

One thing I will point out is that the camera in my phone, as well as my IPad, seems to filter out the pink and blue iridescent color of the MOP. You can still see just a little in my pics, but the color is much more vibrant.
I know early MOP has much better color than 19th c. or newer, but I just can’t seem to capture it. I’m not using flash. Any thoughts?

Even though I can't see the MOP clearly I can still see the vibrant colour.
The boys feet are covered in one dish with coral. The other something dark. I think one is missing.
Perhaps try taking pictures tomorrow in natural light.
Once again really beautiful. I hope they are Ming!! Wouldn't that be something. If they are I would most certainly repair/replace the missing shoe. Easily done I suspect.

I think they are lovely, as I said not seen anything like them. They have a good three dimensional look and are quite charming.
Can a date be elicited from the clothing, hairstyles, activity or even shoes? Probably least likely from the clothes, but depictions of children's hair does vary.
