So, just got home and couldn’t wait to set up my new desk I bought at the estate sale!
Funny story….
As I posted earlier, I went to Richmond to buy a plaque, but I was only #3 in line and literally had no chance of getting it.
So, the night before the sale I had to re-evaluate other options for buying that might exist.
Then I saw this photo….
Do you see it? If you don’t, don’t feel bad. 10 experienced Chinese buyers were in line with me for this sale…. They all missed the desk.
How did I know it was huanghuali?
Well, I was not 100% sure from this terrible photo, but there were three things going for it.
1) The faint reflection on the side of the desk shows a slight wavy grain.
2) The house was filled with beautiful 18-19th c mahogany with similar wavy HH grain, so I figured they would match the grain of their other pieces of furniture.
3) The pedestal desk form is a known huanghuali style of furniture. See below:

Funnier still (or perhaps just extremely lucky), another Chinese buyer beat me to the desk. Only that buyer was so focused on the blue and white planter on the desk (an obvious fake), that he never even noticed the amazing desk it was sitting on.
Pulled the price tag and slapped a ‘sold’ sticker on it - the desk was MINE!
Now, honestly, I’m not really sure how good it is, but I think ‘damn good’ is appropriate in this case.
The dali stone seems to be a very unique and scholarly feature. The carvings on the drawer fronts does appear to be imperial workshop quality, and hopefully Qianlong.

@julia Thank you. Well, the beauty of Chinese furniture is that it is very functional and durable, so keeping it is most definately an option.
However, I generally keep nice looking pieces of lower value, or damaged and therefore unsellable. The money from the sale of higher dollar pieces not only pays my way of life, but funds future purchases, so it keeps me on the hunt.
Right now, I don't need to sell, so I'll just stare into the endless motion of the swirls of light and dark of the dream stone, but that can change quickly and unexpectedly.
@greeno107 Nice desk to sit at and write your collectors guide to buying great treasure books. By the way, I'd like a signed copy once they're done. You could even have a limited edition version that comes with an Imperial shard. I got ideas man.
@johnshoe I would love to share more about the previous owner and the history behind the desk, but I can't at this tme. I'm waiting on a future opportunity to return to the estate for a private sale.
The idea has crossed my mind about a book, but it would be sooo very self indulging that I might have to title it, 'The biggest bragger in the world's guide to treasure's he has found for near nothing!'
Not such a bad title, right?
