Hey all,
As I'm sure my posts over time have shown, I'm often a bit "frugal" when it comes to adding to parts of my own collection; some might say downright stingy - to which I wouldn't even argue with 😆
For that reason, it's a bit of an irony that my favourite Chinese pieces are Famille Verte ones generally - therefore putting most of them outside of my splurging range by sizable margins.
I came across this late Qing (probably early 20th Century?) one and made an offer for $100 that got accepted; it's heavily repaired from significant breakage/damage, and somewhat obviously so.
Absolutely love it, and was thrilled to put it on the shelves today. What beautiful enameling!
I've always admired the later revival/tribute styles of Kangxi and such pieces, but don't really desire the figural style ones all too greatly... much more prefer the nature/floral panel styled pieces, and this one (even tho clearly repaired) fit my list perfectly. It's not going to sell for 4-figures anytime soon; and that's quite alright with me.
Currently searching for a domed lid and matching wood stand to place it with. I think he's quite a handsome addition!
Bonus: Look how similar the palette is to my ko-Imari style charger! Very nice Verte-like colour application on it; and quite neat to look at the similarities..
Hope everybody is staying safe and healthy - and have some nice additions to their collections in the works! Lots of good pieces out there right now for fair prices imo
Best regards,
-JRN
Is that a ginko leaf on your charger, one of my favorite trees with lovely fan shaped leaves?
Thanks @imperialfinegems! Wish I could budget a carved jade lid for it from you 🤣
@sharonp
That's actually a great question, and it's had me stumped for a minute ever since I got this one a while back!
They certainly look like Ginko leaves, but it's been rather hard (for me) to find examples of Japanese Imari pieces with them compared to, say, chrysanthemums or cherry blossoms. Most of the Imari pieces enameled with beautiful ginko leaves I've come across have been touted as Kangxi or other Chinese examples; so this one remains a fun puzzle when I get time here and there to search!
Regards,
-JRN
Hi JRN -
As with Mark, a very nice example and secured for a very reasonable price ...
If possible, it would be nice to see some images of the other side and base ...
Personally, the damage would not concern me ...
Congratulations on acquiring ...
Stuart
I'd say you scored! That's lovely.
It's funny but sometimes the best deals on pieces I really love pop up when I'm not really looking or in the mood to buy. I'll still snap them up. (Besides being on a teacher's budget, I live in a small apartment, so I keep my collection to plates that can stack up and not take up too much room.)
Congratulations!
Steve
@ming1449
Hey Stuart, thank you so much for the kind encouraging words!
Here's some pictures for you - at first I thought it was a modern reproduction; but after some very helpful advice and assistance (@imperialfinegems, thank you again for the help again and asking around!) I figured it was worth a shot..
Sandy tapered foot-rim, unglazed top of the lip, ect.. makes me think very early 20th century?
The only "missing" surface part is on the left near the trees, a small bit of character added to it which I don't mind 😀
Also @steve
Thank you sir! What you said about desired listings popping up when you don't want to buy, but do anyways... so true haha
I too have to organize my collection to fit in an apartment bedroom; ceramic Jenga I call it
By the way; I hope you are okay currently with the situation..
My roommate is a very passionate educator and it's been hard on him to not have an outlet right now to teach.
He loves it, as I'm sure you do as well.
Thank you for what you do: education is a selfless career and often goes unappreciated.. but it is the way of our future and instilling passion and knowledge to the future generations. Much respect my friend 🙂
Been shipping out orders all day so apologies for the delayed response..
Best regards, hope everybody is well!
-JRN
Many thanks for posting these addition images ...
If intended for your own collection, certainly worthy of some restoration?!🤔 ...
Stuart
@watership
Thank you for the distinguishing on that! It is quite a lovely underglaze blue.. very soft. Love the way it contrasts with the more vibrant polychrome style of the rim features..
@ming1449
And thanks to you for the kind words, glad the images were of some use! 🙂
Absolutely worth planning some restoration for, no doubt at all! Hope to have this piece with me for many years to come.. so joyed to have gotten it
Hope everybody is well, appreciate all the kindness and encouragement once again; and as always, the ever-so valuable education from well-learned and knowledgeable posters such as yourselves..
Sincerely thankful for that
Best,
-JRN
