After owning this pair of Japanese Edo period landscape scrolls for 35 years I have recently been able to identify their actual locations. Purchased the pair at San Francisco Bonhams at auction (then Butterfields). My interest in travel to Japanese National Parks led me to the identifications located in Nikko National Park (Kegon Falls and Mount Nantai). Thought I would share both scrolls together the scenery photos:

Interesting to see the photos, reminds me of a colleague that had an oil painting of a California mountain in his office, but he only knew that it was a California mountain and did not know what mountain. I told him to try Mount Shasta and he pulled it up on his computer, it was Mount Shasta like you could superimpose on top of his painting. That was just a lucky guess on my part, but I did not tell him that part. Lovely scrolls, glad you identified the location. Sharon

As a collector of Japanese postage stamps I know they issued many National Park stamps beginning in 1937. Nikko Park set of 1939 has the two scenes of the mountain and waterfall. While gazing at my collection, I noticed that two of the stamps looked exactly like the scrolls I had acquired. I did more research to confirm. Yes, I have been to Nikko (very beautiful scenery).

Yes my Humphrey had fun attacking my scroll collection when he was a kitten years ago. He really did not do any damage while swiping with paws, but not clawing at all. To me, most of my collection can be replaced, but Humphrey cannot be.
FYI, list of losses due to Humphrey:
One Ming Swatow Foo Dog plate,
One six panel Japanese Byoobu screen,
One Republic 17" vase (just a small rim chip).
He is much calmer now as a 10 year old.

@gfhandel Thought you might get a kick out of seeing my childhood stamp album, it is the 1961 printing of an earlier printing. I hot footed it to F.W. Woolworth to spend my allowance on it and then entered into a mail contract of sorts with H.E. Harris stamps on approval, postage was cheap in 1961. The state stamps was for the Bicentennial and now I save sheets of stamps in an acid free album. The Forbidden city stamps I probably bought at the Forbidden City museum shop, although possibly the postal office located in our hotel. The cover of 4 stamps was commemorating the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Palace Museum, Stamp one: Gates Towering the Clouds, Stamp Two: Harmony and brightness, Stamp Three: Union of Heaven and Earth, Stamp Four: Beautiful Garden. I bought some stamps in the post office located in the hotel to mail some post cards and the clerk handed me a little bottle of glue and a brush to adhere the stamps, quaint, I was completely charmed. Those were the days! Thanks for sharing your stamp collecting story.
My first album goes back to 1953. Stamps were very popular in the 50’s and 60’s and seems to have lost popularity from the 80’s on. Attending any stamp shows currently seems to be attended by older generation males. Coin collecting seems to have surpassed stamps in popularity recently. Countries including the US have flooded the market with new issues and it is too expensive for collectors to keep up. So I basically am sticking to the “Classic” period 1950 and earlier.
