Hello All,
Purchased this yesterday at trash and treasure. It is quite expressively carved with some detail the carver has managed to make that very wrinkly elephant look quite fierce. But don't think it has much age not any wear marks or signs of handling. But it was only the price of a coffee and bun, so I left the market a bit slimmer in the waist but not in the pocket. It is quite hefty in the hand with a nice solid feel so pretty certain it is carved from a tropical hard wood. It is always hard to be sure on the timber when the varnish is not worn and you can't see the grain clearly. I am happy with it there are plenty of more obvious reproductions selling on line priced in the hundreds. It is 16cm tall.

I like it Michael , a little different and looks nicely carved , are those glass eyes on the Elephant?
I don't know how to date these wooden carvings but if i was pushed to from a photograph i would say mid 20th century.
Carl
Hi Carl,l
Thanks for replying you might be right on the age. But I think a touch older possibly. Glass eyes are a relatively new addition to Chinese figurative wood carving mid to late Qing I think. They are not always a sign of quality or great age. I like it when Kalica is depicted riding an Elephant with extremely wrinkled skin. Antique ceramic items that depict the elephant in this way always seem to bring very high prices must appeal to the Chinese, western eyes seem to think that the depiction is a bit to cartoonish and they seem to prefer to stick to their bolt upright shop dummy Mandarin type figures.
Cheers
Michael
Looks Great and many hours must have gone into this. How long would this take to make and would it be by hand. You can now enjoy your next coffee at home in style:). Good buy.
Dear Short,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Dating wood carvings is very difficult a good carver is a good carver regardless of the time or period. People get hung up on the quality and type of timber used. With the wholesale redevelopment going on in China with the past being swept away there is no shortage of old quality timber. I am happy with this figure the carver has managed to get some expression and life into the figures. I did not pay an antique price so had no expectations of it being old. With older carvings you often have to look twice at them as they are carved to be seen at a distance and viewed from below in a temple or on a roof. Even quite small carvings for home shrines can have this strange perspective. In common with the west wood carving was not considered a great art or fine art in China consequently not many carvers names have come down to us. Different in Japan where some carvers of Netsuke are revered and volumes have been written about them. You are right about time taken I can tell you from personal experience you can forget about being paid by the hour carving wood.
Cheers and Happy Hunting

Thank you Michael. That was most interesting about wood pieces being made for roof and temples that might be viewed from a distance. I have kinda noticed this perspective, it comes across even in Japense pottery sometimes. They can look quite appealing from a distance. However never really thought it was anything more than coincidence. Good to know.
@JohnSteward
Everything , the Chairs and the Table and that Side cabinet, all so intricately carved, you must like your wood work. I skipped woodwork in school. Always have regretted it. For porcelain there are Cabinets, where do Wood figurines go ideally.
The dragon is my favorite.
Yes I am my wife thinks I’m nuts for collecting it John
Thanks Short
The table and chairs are 1870 rose wood the side cabinet is made in China it has a China hutch
to match they are super heavy thanks for commenting John
