Any advice? It’s not the first time they rip me off but it’ll be the last! Rude and arrogant too!
Joanie’s are not experts but they do have nice items at times. If you do spot something of interest you could request an opinion from Peter before bidding for a $10 charge. Careful with bidding out there as there are many deceptive items and hope you didn’t lose too much.
George
Thanks George!
They actually mix good things with fakes, but most times I believe they know it. In any event, I bought these a long time ago and before I knew of Peter. If I had known Peter these things would not have happen to me. I was also untrained back then. I’ve been selling porcelain for over 26 years but Chinese porcelain is another world.
Question: how does one sell these on eBay when you can’t even date then?
Most items can be dated, i.e. on this forum, by getting an opinion from Peter, and by increasing your knowledge of Asian items going forward. You will be and should be confident of listing on eBay when you have increased your knowledge. Bottom line, don't bid on anything you are not certain of.
George
Thank you, George. I had Peter look at them but he never gave me a date.
I appreciate your time and efforts.
Best regards,
Victoria
Is Asian Antiques Online, Joanies House of Treasures on ebay?
Its not hard to go to China, and buy good looking fakes, particularly if you speak the language, and know your way around. I've long suspected JHT was doing something similar (they do buy items on auction, and resell on ebay, but those items in many cases are Chinese fakes themselves, put into Canadian and US auctions by relatives of Chinese, trying to trick local Chinese into thinking they've been out of China for decades).
Yes, they’re on eBay and they have good things too but It’s the second time it happens to me and it’s expensive. It really doesn't matter to me where the seller buys their items as long as their honest about it. I’m now stuck with these candlesticks and not sure what age they are.. they could have been made yesterday. Unbelievable.
As I've said before , I can't access JHT sales because he/she doesn't sell in Italy. But if someone posts links to their auctions, then I can access them. I invite everyone to post links to their sales if they are suspicious. It is right to let people know who is honest and who is not.
Giovanni
Hi Victoria,
Welcome to the forum.
I was a little confused at first with your posts regarding Asian arts online and JHT.
So after viewing your previous posts you are Victoria from Asian arts online and the pair of vases were purchased by you from JHT. Is this correct?
If so, sadly you have purchased a pair of modern fakes. I don't know how much you paid for them and or what they were described as etc.
All you can do, I guess is list them as you have already done so as 20th Century and hope for the best etc.
As far as JHT is concerned. Lesson learned.
I concur with sentiments posted by Giovanni, George and Avion.
Mark
correct, I am AsianAntiquesonline and I purchased these candle sticks ( not vases) from Joanie’s. I decided to list them as 20th c cause I really have no idea when they were made. If anyone knows, your help is appreciated. Back then, I made several mistakes so I’d like to warn others cause I refuse to recycle fakes. Shame on them!
@clayandbrush They just sold a Martha Washington plate for over $13k that was a fake and assessed by Peter. Another place to watch out for is mr xie... not only does he sell fakes mixed with real items but he’s always shill bidding. I have followed him for over a year now.
We have to be careful.
Thank you
Dear Victoria (if this is your name) I too did not understood your first message.
Please do not be afraid in telling complete names. Thieves must be reported. Since it is useless to tell this to ebay (I call this complicity), let at least us to tell clearly. In help of the few honest sellers who, incredibly, are much less successful than those thieves.
Regards
Giovanni
Thank you for the question. My name is Victoria and my shop is AsianAntiquesonline. I consult with Peter on almost every item I sell.
The person (or persons) that sold me these fakes is JHT ( Joanie’s house of treasures) and they sell frequently on eBay. They are based in Canada. I hope this clarifies any confusion. Apologies!
I wonder if these are transfer-decorated. I have a kangxi-style square vase made into a lamp that is transfer-decorated with the same motive repeated on all four side but it's really high quality cobalt-blue glaze and good quality porcelain. I think that one would date to the early 20th century.
It has been my experience that there are two main types of nefarious dealers - those that deal in fakes (they buy fakes at source and peddle them as original, they do this knowing exactly what they’re doing) and those that buy whatever they can get their hands on, paying no attention to authenticity, and sell them as original. This second group don’t care whether they’re fake or not, only whether they can pass as genuine.
Of course, both these practices amount to the same thing - fraud, but the second type allows the dealer to say “I bought them in good faith from X” if they’re caught out. In many ways, the second type is more ‘dangerous’ because you can be lulled into a false sense of security by the fact that you’ve previously bought genuine items from them.
