I’m taking this sumida gawa piece to Atlanta this week to sell. But, if anyone in the Forum is a collector of sumida gawa…. Send me an email if you’d like to buy it. Tim - [email protected]
I bought the piece in Missouri at a fantastic collector’s home over ten years ago. I shipped it home rather than trying to take it on the airplane, and wouldn’t you know it, the shipper did a lousy job packing and the piece broke - 3 legs and the tip of one tusk.
It has sat in a box ever since, but yesterday I decided to restore it. I’m about 1/2 way done… should have the glaze touched up by tomorrow evening and ready for the antique show.
I’m leaving some previous condition issues that where there when I bought it: The head of Kannon shows a previous repair, and some cracks in the inner lip of the cover. And, one boy appears to be missing an arm….or it was accidentally left off during firing- hard to say.
This is a masterpiece of sumida gawa work (and I don’t often use this type of description) and it’s large 18 1/2” tall x 13” long… unsigned, but the only example like this that I’ve come across in ten years.
Condition does effect value, I get that. But with very rare pieces like this, you’re buying it to be able to say you have a one of kind, and perhaps one of the best examples of sumida gawa work in the world.

I have Sumida Gawa pieces from long ago - and one of the smallest - a tooth pick holder. I very seldom see Sumida Gawa; are they still collected?

@greeno107 For some reason, I feel like I would like these more if I collected majolica. I can see them together.
