I have begun to fall in love with Asian antique ceramics but have much to learn. My grandmother left me a lovely blue and white bowl that she told me is "very old", more than "200 years old. I have it on eBay but wondering now if this is the best forum. I greatly appreciate your expertise.

Hi quinnbees,
as far as I can judge from my tiny smartphone screen this looks like a very nice 19th century bowl probably made for the Southeast Asian market. Could you please insert a link to Ebay?
Best regards

I'm amazed at your skills, Shinigami. If you don't mind me asking, what are the indicators for it being made for a Southeast Asian market?
Regards,
positive
Sorry if I seem to be an expert which I am definitely not. It's just that I am reading a book on Peranakan porcelain at the moment. They had the garish yellow, green and pink porcelain for special occasions, but for everyday use they preferred blue and white Kitchen Qing like quinnbee's bowl above. These were quite popular in South East Asia.
Birgit
Hi,
My feeling is that is might be Japanese. My reasons, possibly incorrect, are the base (footrim, blue circle, mark), the pattern and the glaze. Could it be Arita?
Best wishes,
Julia
I think Julia is correct, it appears to be a Japanese example emulating a well known Chinese type which were done often during the 19th C. The wide blue ring under the base running along the foot rim and the two character mark done vertically, as well the shape of the rim looks very Japanese to me. The Japanese did a lot of Chinese looking work after the 1880's and well into the 1930's.
Then again, I can be wrong..but I think it's Japanese. It would look dandy with a nice plant!!

Hi Shinigami,
Thank you for your reply. I am far from an expert myself, but I am really interested in Chinese trade history, and I will be sure to look into information on Peranakan production going forward. Thank you for bringing that to my attention!

Yes, Peter you are right. The wide blue ring under the base running along the foot rim is an important indicator. But there is only one character mark and it is not done vertically. The charakter means "play (玩 wán)". Normally the chinese porcelain would have the mark "play jade (wán yù)" like "玩玉"。
