I have approximately 70 Chinese wooden display stands that belonged to my mom & grandparents. They range in inside diameter from 1" to 9" with most in the 4-5" range. Many are beautifully carved. There are some matching pairs. I know to list the inside diameters of each item. I am guessing that a matching pair should be listed together. I am wondering if there are any specific sizes that are harder to find that I should list first. Also, I am thinking I should match up some of the stands with some of the pieces I intend to list in the future. Does including a stand encourage a sale or is does it add no value?
(The first stand I listed sold this week on eBay for $43.00. The second one which is larger has not had a bid yet.)
Thank you for any suggestions you might have for this new member.
Hi Carla,
Welcome to the Forum. I think a pair should always go together and it will maxmise your end result.
End price will depend on many variables : quality, period, condition, intricacies of the carving.
If you have a great pair of vase I think it will add value but if the vases are not good quality or modern, it will not add value IMO.
To sum up I would sell them separately and by pair. lots are also very attractive to bidders.
Good luck with your sale
I really don't know where to start as far as listing. But I will search out pairs first. And consider setting up some lots. If I do lots, do I still need to list the inside diameters for each stand?
Some interesting and large stands you have Carla. Very useful for large jardiniere planters. I think you are right pairs should be your priorit. You should think of ebay as software (Cassini) and not a person. The more information you will provide the better it is. Future buyers will not complain after the sale and leave you bad reviews. I know it's a pain but dimensions are must if you want to sell well. I would always advise you to place a common object that everyone has like a can of soda, wine bottle or even a fruit next to the object so buyer can guess the size. Always indicate damages/restorations this will avoid bad reviews.

Good luck
Thank you so much for your very helpful feedback. I may have watched this video already but will double check. I know I watched at least one and learned a great deal from it! I went right back to my eBay listings and tweaked each one.
I am attaching a link to the one large stand I have listed right now. I feel as though I have included all the information I have on the item. I am not the expert that my grandfather was so I only know the pieces from his collection are no newer than the middle of 20th century but not how much older.
HAND CARVED CHINESE ROSEWOOD DISPLAY STAND 9.5" (25CM) WITH FLOWERS & TREES:
I had not seen this particular video but I have now! Thank you so much for recommending it AND for posting it right here so I did not have to search for it. Very informative.I was not aware of Cassini. I will go revise my listings again based on what I learned.
Hi Carla, looking at your porcelain I have noticed that your starting prices are quite high, maybe even too high for a buy-it-now price, considering the quality of the items. If they stay unsold for a long time and you want to get rid of them you could consider a $1 starting price and let the market decide.
Birgit
Hi Carla,
that stand that you have shown is not rosewood, it is elm.
Be careful, especially the Chinese buyers are looking for any excuse that will allow them to ask for a refund, and eBay will invariably agree with them and force you to refund.
Better not to mention what you are not sure about, just say "wood", and that's it.
Regards,
Giovanni
Hi Carla - and welcome to this wonderful forum ...
Siseno, Birgit and Giovanni have given you some excellent advice - learn from this ...
Stuart
Giovanni is absolutely correct with his submission. Your stand is elm and not Rosewood.
You have some very nice and desirable stands there. I am unable to determine their age etc. Older ones tend to be heavier.
I agree with all options offered by other members here.
Mark
Thank you to all who responded. I appreciate your suggestions and have begun implementing them with my current eBay listings. Next step is to identify all the pairs! And work on improving my photos. Ans start measuring the diameters. I know the stands are made from different woods but I do not feel I can identify any so will need to list as "wood" only.
I grew up with Chinese artifacts and furniture around me as my mother and my grandparents both had many, many items. I love it but sadly, I did not learn much about the history of any of the pieces. My only frame of reference for knowing that certain pieces are older are photographs from various homes that my family lived in as the Chinese items were always front and center in their homes. My grandparents began collecting Chinese pieces in the 1930's in the Panama Canal Zone where they lived until the late 1960's. When they moved to the US, they continued buying until sometime in the late 1980's. They were not interested in modern pieces in their later years and grandpa was considered an antique dealer in Florida.
Again, very grateful for your kind input.
