Hello All
I found the newly added publication of Yuan Dynasty Ceramics to the Reference Bookcase extremely interesting, but was disappointed with the information regarding Ge ware. The reason for this is that it seems to infer that the feature of all Ge ware is that it has a ‘thin grey stoneware body’ and indeed the exquisite stem cup that Peter highlighted in his excellent video of the National Palace Museum is a good example. But actually there are also Ge ware pieces that have a thick black biscuit body which I understand are referred to as ‘handed-down’ Ge. I have yet to find out why they are called this, but the Beijing Palace Museum appear to have some examples of the heavily potted with a green celadon, beige and also blueish grey glaze.
Below is a green celadon glaze brush washer in the Palace Museum collection which has the ‘iron wire and golden thread’ crackle pattern,as well as the beige plate, but below these are examples having just the ‘iron wire’ crackle or just the ‘golden thread’ crackle. It is also worth noting that not all of these pieces have the ‘iron-coloured foot’ or ‘purple’ top.

Although this publication states that the archaeological evidence seems to show that Ge ware was produced at the Guan kiln, in 1994 there was a scientific study carried out on samples of the famous Chinese Greenware bodies that seems to contradict this assertion. The analysis of the composition of the samples of the bodies of Southern Song Guan, Longquan Black Body and Ge ware found that there was similar iron content in both the Longquan Black Body and Ge ware samples and that there was a consistency of the results for these two types in regards to the ‘percentage of K2 O against that of SiO2’. The analysis of the Southern Song Guan ware showed the composition of the body was distinctly different to that of both the Longquan Black Body and Ge ware and this lead to the conclusion that Ge ware was most likely made in the kilns around Dayao and not at the Guan kiln.
I guess that until the Ge ware kiln site is found there will be different opinions as to where this type of ceramics was made, but I would be interested to find out if anybody knows of a more difinitive publication about this mysterious stoneware.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Hi Jeremy -
Ge wares are a controversial and very difficult subject, with opinions amongst scholars, not least on whether any pieces can be securely dated to Southern Song, or whether such wares were not produced to the Yuan dynasty ...
‘Handed-down’ refers to ‘Heirloom’ Ge wares, which some scholars believe are genuine Southern Song pieces - others disagree with this attribution ...
The Palace Museum, Beijing, held an exhibition on Ge wares in 2017 to try and clarify some of these issues ...
You may find the attached brief extracts from this publication of some interest - also attached three images of pieces attributed Southern Song ‘Heirloom’ pieces - although such dating is still controversial ...

Hello Stuart
Thank you for posting some of the pages from this publication of the Palace Museum exhibition. I have been considering purchasing this book. Please can you inform me if the photographs in the book include the bases of the pieces, especially if any dishes are shown.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Hello Stuart
Please can I ask you another question about this book which is, does the book show whether or not the Ge plate reference Heritage 00145378 was in the 2017 exhibition. I have put a link below to this particular piece.

Another excellent publication which included fabulous Ge wares is the National Palace Museum 2016 ‘Precious as the Morning Star’ exhibition catalogue, which also includes there holdings of Ru and Guan pieces - image attached for reference ...

I heard back from Peter who wrote that the forum operator/ip administrator had performed an update on the system and caused a glitch.
Apparantly this has been rectified. However I still have no access to the like button or the delete button. Hence the unwarranted spam currently on view.

I am able to "like" again. Maybe it has got fixed a second time?
And also edit, it seems. I couldn't the other day - sorry, Jeremy, apologies for interrupting your thread.
Hi John, Mark, Julia and all,

Presently I'am the same as Mark, no access to any of the 'buttons' ..?!🤔
No problems with post or image attachments though ..!!😉
