So during some reasearch of this jar. Does anyone here know what museum it is located?
And this grey discoloration it has on the surface. Does anyone here know what causes this? Was it there from the beginning?

The overall painting style, motif combinations, individual drawing of elements within, cobalt tone, shading and application of such would all indicate this is not an authentic Yuan period guan …
But just my thoughts/opinion …

@Stuart. I'm sorry I hadn't seen your post. Are you certain about that?
I was wondering why these two jars are not on the official list of such jars. According to Christie's there are only eight such jars and these are all painted with a wave-pattern around the neck. (I wonder if that could be the reason why?)
And what about the discoloration. Is it from the firing or is it from burial? I have a "Ming" blue and white jar jar of potential high value that has the same kind of discoloration.

Firstly, there are 10 known such guans that are consider genuine examples from the Yuan period, all painted with figural scenes from contemporary plays involving either heroic historical acts or complicated love affairs …
There are a few other different vessels forms, such as meipings or yuhunchun pings, known also decorated with similar scenes which are also consider authentic …
As for the ‘other jar’ cited, this was excavated Hengxian, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the main body painted with a scene showing General Yuchi Gong saving Emperor Taizong (r. 626-49) Tang dynasty, from the historical play Yuchi Gong jiu zhu [Yuchi Gong saves his lord]. This guan has been extensively published, such as Zhang & Huo 2015, p. 57; Ye Peilan 1998,p.33 ….
No one can ever be ‘certain’ without seeing/handling any object in person, and have the knowledge to differentiate between the originals, later copies and the modern examples …
As above, just ‘my opinion’, but based on the above ….
Perhaps you should post some images of your Ming guan? …

I don't have any pictures available unfortunately.
I'm sorry I was a little short of my head. I was having a few bad days. It's my Xuande marked dragon jar similar to an excavated Yongle jar at Henan Museum. I bought it because I suspected it was mark and period and posted it here on this forum but people didn't believe it was mark and period. I have since come across many similar fake jars but none of them as convincingly authentic looking as the one I have. Jar at Henan museum:
The discoloration suggest that the jar I have is an excavated example. It would however be pretty wild if I should have found the only other athentic example, so most likely later. If it wasn't because I have found pieces equally as rare and valuable as the jar would be I would probably give up on it ...
@Stuart Do you happen to know the number of Xuande mark and period known to exist? And do you know of excavated examples on private hands?
