Deciding to write this post has not been an easy decision...
Let me be clear, I have the highest of praise and respect for Peter and his team. As we all know, the free Asian Art content regularly made available here and on youtube is second to none (by a massive margin).
A couple of weeks ago I was going to post a question to this forum about eBay member: ancientrhyme and specifically all the dubious "Antiques" they have been listing on eBay, for example the 24 auctions all ending on 3rd May 2020, which sold for around Fifty Thousand US Dollars. However, as Peter highlighted two of their pieces in his "This Weeks Featured Items" section in the Volume 321 Bidamount Auction News Letter, I thought it best not to say anything.
Today I was contacted by someone I have known for many years, asking me what I thought of items ancientrhyme had recently sold... The same items I had previously had great reservations with. This person had won a few of ancientrhyme 3rd May 2020 eBay auctions and now found out today that these items were being shipped from HONG KONG. They were surprised by this, as they were under the impression that ancientrhyme was based in La Habra, California, United States. PLEASE NOTE: eBay have never in its 25 year history had an issue with sellers from one country pretending they are based in another country. - Should we?
Attached are self-explanatory screenshots.
I am very interest to know what the Bid Amount Community think of the items being offered by the eBay seller ancientrhyme
In writing this post I am in no way accusing Peter or his fantastic team of any involvement or wrongdoing. I am however highlighting the flaw in running an Antiques News Letter that promotes items that have not been personally inspected. I believe mistakes can and will be made, this is totally normal and is to be expected when dealing with such high volume of items on a regular basis with a small team.
Sincerely,
Lewis
Dear Lewis,
I can't find this seller. Can you post a link to one of his sales?
Thank you.
Giovanni
You don't even have to look at the pictures. Only with the description and title you know there is something wrong.
"I am not expert on chinese item. Only my best guest. This item is from high end local estate sale."
This is the same kind of thing you hear all around from these people selling dubious items.
All brand new in my opinion, not sure why Peter included some of his items in the newsletter.
My goodness he got 18,000 for a jade item! I am not saying it isn't worth that because I don't know, but for a relatively unknown seller with a bad mark against him, he achieves high prices. How is he so visible? And he states an extended handling time which would make me suspicious if the item is allegedly in the US. Very interesting.
I wonder why he won't shop to Luxembourg or the Czech Republic?
Appreciate the feedback @springmeier @julia @steve
I have already 'suggested' to the guy who contacted me, that once he receives the items to return them to ancientrhyme for a full refund. The good news for him is that this seller offers a 14 days Return Policy. I am sure he will get his money back as in my experience this type of seller doesn't want Negative eBay feedback. However having said that, this type of seller can just open another eBay account and start over. I had a brief look through all the bidders and their scores, for each of the recent 24 auctions and it appears to me that the bidders and unfortunate 'winners' are genuine. There was not too many repeat bids from the same accounts. However, if one can turnover USD $50,000 a week selling a couple of dozen new antiques, then maybe they are willing to create tens if not hundreds of ebay accounts to cover their shill bidding. It amazes me why this type of thing is allowed to continue on eBay... Oh hang on, eBay take 10 to 14% sales commission of these scammer's turnover 😣
So the fraudsters gain, eBay gains and the losers are the unwitting buyers and honest sellers, the who don't knowingly sell copies / fakes / reproductions and therefore simply cannot compete with the perfect condition, shiny 'new' antiques.
When $50,000 or $50,000,000 is spent on fake antiques, that money has did not enter the Asian Antique Arts economy... the trickle up affect should not be underestimated. When a genuine dealer makes a good sale they reinvest in more genuine items, I assume when a fraudster makes a 'good' sale those funds are probably squandered.
So maybe the problem is people's illogical desire for new looking antiques and their association with knowing that the more perfect something is (specifically Chinese) the more it is potentially financially worth; a chip or hairline devaluing an item by 80 to 90% and all that. I have always thought the Japanese approach of appreciating flaws and the inevitable decomposition of all matter to be the correct path. That said, people's ignorance and greed obviously does not in anyway justify the fraudsters actions.
When this forum first started I remember Peter talking about creating a naming and shaming of eBay Sellers and Buyers (the ones that repeatedly don't pay for winning items). At the time I thought 'that will never work', however as Bidamount has grown significantly since then maybe it's time. The auctioneers report card is fantastic, why not have a eBay Seller's report card? Clearly eBay have no incentive to assist, but maybe genuine Asian Art eBay seller's would appreciate some sort of accreditation / formal recognition from Bidamount. Almost all industries have this sort of thing, why not Asian Art Sellers on eBay? And once we have cracked that chestnut, lets sort out all the repeat offenders that don't pay up.
😉
