Birgit,
For the horse I used strong 3m packaging tape wrapped around the base and around sides and bottom of shelving. Works well for the horse with base but obviously won’t work for other ceramics without bases.

@gfhandel
Simply lovely piece.. smart idea "earthquake-proofing" it while on display. Brilliant.
As for the general forum question:
Most expensive via established/recognized market value? or most expensive in terms of how much we shelled out to pay for the piece?
Very different results for me depending on which it is.. for better or worse 😆
Regards,
-JRN
Hi JRN,
most expensive purchase price. That can also mean an overpriced fake if someone wants to show it😁
Birgit
Greetings @shinigami 😀
I don't want to break any rules, as I know we have many international members where my (to possibly be posted, if acceptable) item in question is banned/heavily restricted - as it is ivory..
Wanted to get permission first so I don't step on any toes; as even though it is not for sale, I want to be courteous (and overly cautious haha)
Will post my other ceramic related item within the next few minutes though.
Regards,
-JRN
Are there countries where it’s not allowed to possess antique ivory?
Birgit
@shinigami no so much possession per-se, but here in the United States (plus the CITES guidelines by our Wildlife Department causes even state rules to vary, ranging from total federal offense to sale in any capacity). In my state (Georgia) I believe sales or exchanges within state lines are allowed, but still rather scrutinized as it needs to meet certain requirements.
Have been wanting to get them appraised/insured for collateral value, but Georgia is hardly the place to find such a place - and even shipping out of state lines for aging/authenticating is a grey area for most..
Thankfully my roommate is thrifty and found a gigantic blacklight which we keep in our residence. Of course, this does not always mean authentic or real ivory, as certain artificial materials can also fluoresce, and certain enamels/coatings or natural patina on legit ivory can dull the natural glow under the waveforms.. It is quite a puzzle sometimes haha.
Schreger line inspection (under a magnification unit) is generally the most viable confirmation, as artificial resins and ect still cannot produce lines that mimic that of authentic ivory..
Sorry for the spam, pics upcoming...
-JRN
I know of no countries that prohibits the ownership of ivory. However importing is illegal without a cites certificate stating pre 1947. Even then it is very problematic as a number of countries have a blanket ban.
Not sure but I think Hong Kong is still awash with ivory shops that sell new carvings.
Mark
Alas, these remain the most expensive Asian antique related pieces I have acquired over my short years of infrequent collecting (until it became a frequent habit earlier this year, haha)
I won the carved tusk/horn as a gentleman's agreement in my college days (filled with mischief and shenanigans of the extreme of all sorts, of course) during a (hazy 🤣 ) poker round. Slow-played quad 2's to his Queen-high Straight to the tune of a $700, and being the financially irresponsible lads we were, he had rent due the next week. Got this, and he got to not get evicted. All is well that ends well, I suppose..
The Doctor's Lady I actually acquired for around $180 (making it my most expensive-out-of pocket item thus-far, I'm stingy).
About 9" and a near mirror to the one sold at Sotheby's in Amsterdam pre-2014 import ban, if I'm not mistaken..
Finally made my first three figure ceramic purchase yesterday, am beyond excited and will post when it arrives (I pray safely)
Hope all enjoy,
-JRN
Also just realized my post was made with my Global Auctions Pages access account...
Sorry for the confusion 😆
I think I collect antiques and vintage items because modern technology is something I struggle with more than distinguishing $7 faux-worn 80s deco vases and models made centuries prior! LOL
The tusk looks beautiful and intricately carved. Imagine you carve it for weeks and weeks and then a part of it breaks out. 😩 I would be afraid to even touch it.
Birgit
So far this is my most expensive piece. It's a yellow vase with Anhua decoration. I got it from an auction house, where it was described as "most likely Qianlong". I wasn't very much experienced back then, but I liked it. So I bought it, hoping it would be Qianlong. All the time I had doubts about the vase, so I decided to send some pictures to Nagel and they told me it was probably from the Guangxu or republic period. But at least they put it in the same price range that I had paid . 😀
Beautiful and elegant. You can clearly see that it’s no modern copy.
Birgit
My most expensive item is not Chinese, but an 18th c Chelsea Vase.
Dresdful timing as it was just 3 weeks ago before the Lockdown in the U.K and the Auction House is closed and my paid for Vase is still there !
Add to that the fact that my work immediately ceased and you can see the bitter sweet irony of such s beautiful purchase.
Oh well, hopefully in a few months we will be all back to normality.
