Did any of you bid on or win the Meiping vase Peter featured last week? The auction was yesterday and it sold for $3,000 which seems reasonable.
I looked at the rest of the items for sale and, honestly, a lot of them seemed very sketchy to me and not enough photos (at least in the auction site). I ended up not bidding on anything. My ears perked up when Peter mentioned it was in San Jose - my neck of the woods. The auction house seems new - just 1 review from last summer.

The auction I have been bidding at offered very few photos too, often just one and that seems quite common these days.
I don't think I would have bid on that vase. I am surprised they didn't mention that crack, that kind of thing puts me off.
However, I think a lot of people aren't spending at the moment, it is a very uncertain time.
I don't recall Peter talking about this auction or perhaps I missed it.
The overall pictures are as suggested by @julia very sketcy but apparently they had a link to better images.
I only quickly slimmed through the auction and I wasn't impressed.

@imperialfinegems The vase is featured on the thumbnail of Friday's video. I didn't realize it was cracked; that explains the price. He loved the vase but didn't talk about any of the other items of the auction.
The irritating thing about the "link" to more photos is that they were just the URL address rather than an actual working link. It discourages bidding, IMO.
Does the yellow-ground plate look more 21st century than "19th/20th"? Yes, misleading.
And here's another example, this one didn't sell. I remember Peter warning that if there is a stain on the inside of the foot rim, that's a bad sign. I think his exact words were: "Run!" If this is late Qing, it should have sold for a hefty amount.

Auctions seem to be doing pretty well right now; maybe these uncertain times make people splurge?
Fewer photos discourages bidding, I would say. It's smart for auctions to include as many as possible. Especially if you already took a lot of photos; load them right there in the auction window!
@steve Yes, that's something I don't understand either. One would wish for at least a picture of the bottom. At my local auction house I can ask for more pictures, and they take them and send them to me. I wonder if it wasn't easier to shoot all the pictures when taking the first one and show them on the website from the beginning.

@shinigami Good question! It's something Peter has grumbled about many times.
@steve I think some places like to use fewer pictures because it can feed into speculative buying frenzies, especially with fakes.
@johnshoe Wouldn't a seller want a buying frenzy? I don't think I understand.
