I'm trying to increase my first-site knowledge of Chinese ceramics. My goal is to get to the point where I can eliminate many reproductions or tourist ware items upon first impression. I've attached a photo from an estate auction. If I'm deciding whether to evaluate further, what should I notice about these pieces?

As for the jars I think they not that old buy Chinese items from the bidamount newsletter YouTube other on here have vast experience and will give advice good .

They look 20th century to me, I wouldn't buy them. The right one is probably stencilled. Try to find some hand painted 19th century ones, they are not expensive and look quite nice.

Thanks, Shinigami. When you look at them, what are the characteristics that signal they are new?
First I would make sure that they are hand painted. Then there's a good chance they are 19th century. Usually you would need better pictures to see clearly see if they're printed. Stencil patterns are rather uniform as you can see on the right jar.

Hi Jim,
I don’t know if it’s always possible to tell at a glance? When I scroll through eBay or my local auction’s online photographs, I would keep scrolling until I saw something I liked. Then I would take a closer look.
I would want close-ups so that I could check the enamels etc and whether it was hand painted. I would want photos of the base, rim etc.sometimes I take a look and I can tell it’s not a good buy, other times I have to do some research, ask the seller for more photos or ask the guys in this forum for their advice!?
I may be completely wrong, but I don’t think you have to be an ‘expert’ spotter of this kind of ware, because by the time you have reached a certain level of expertise, like many on this forum (not me!), this kind of ware doesn’t interest you too much? As I say, I could be wrong.
From the two jars in your photo, I would only be interested in having a closer look at the one on the left. The one on the right is obviously stencilled as others have said. If there weren’t any more photos I would either attend the auction to look or walk away. You could, I suppose, leave a very cheeky bid if you couldn’t attend, say $30 just in case nobody else bids on them. But only if you’re curious about them.

how much they are asking for those jars? I suppose about 100 dolalrs? It will be much betetr if you invest that sum in good books. You certainly will learn more than handling two jars that, when you will be more knowledgeable, you will have problems in reselling.

Hi Jim - Giovanni, Nic, Birgit and Chris have all given you some great advice. Any image, no matter how good, will only give an impression of an object so are, by their nature, subjective at best! Try to see and handle as many pieces as you possible can, either at sales, auctions or dealers. This will help train your eyes, to look at objects and your hands, in how different pieces can 'feel', both take time but are very important! Good reference books, as Giovanni mentions and, to some extent auction catalogues, are also important. Final, its always best to ask for advice, and any question you may have regarding a piece first, before potentially purchasing. This can help avoid costly mistakes, something most, if not all collectors have at some point made, but hopefully learnt from! If all this sounds somewhat daunting please don't worry, we all have to start somewhere and its something all collectors/dealers go through when first starting! And this Forum is a wonderful place to learn from and ask for advice/help.
