I recently acquired a stone Buddha head, and in researching it I got more interested in learning the history of where all these heads came from in China. Another reason is simple thieving, robbers could not remove the entire statue but they could take the head, I'm fairly certain that my Buddha head from a weekend trip to Bandung, Java started life as a garden ornament, the street seller said it was antique, but I think not, just a souvenir from our visit to a Scottish friend who lived in a lovely old pre-war Dutch house.
I recently found Buddah heads to be a much bigger subject than expected when trying to find out more about one I had bought on the spur of the moment at a live auction. The first thing I did was try to learn the difference in faces and head gear depending on whether Chinese, Japanese, Thai or Indian and from that try to learn how the Buddah faces changed depending on the period to help me know where my head came from.
Then there is learning about the range of materials used from stone, wood, to bronze, brass and gold.
My head I decided was Thai and in Green stone, however when it arrived I decided it was too heavy for stone and a bit of scraping revealed a golden metal underneath. A few hours cleaning later I had a golden head, a heavy brass is what I currently think, at first I thought it may be gold as it looked so golden.
I read that because for hundreds of years Burmese raiders attacked Thai temples many high value objects were painted or covered to look like rock so as not to be looted.
From this I learned more about Buddist traditions regarding the Buddha heads including that if it was used in the temple then the monks would sometimes seal some artefacts inside them.
I tapped my Buddha head and it definitely has chamber's inside as the sound goes from full to ringing as I tap along it.
I am still learning but it's more interesting than it seems at first glance
