Why? I fell in love with Chinese and Japanese Landscape scrolls many years ago. Try finding authentic Chinese landscapes from 19th century. Good luck! Fakes abound and authentic works are not affordable if you can locate them with many in museums or being lost over time.
However, many beautiful landscapes in the Chinese style “Nanga” were done in Japan and have been well preserved in family homes. With the aging population recently many nice examples are appearing on the market, even on eBay for ridiculous prices. If you are patient and find reliable sellers you can find many nice examples.
Here is a pair of late Meiji ca. 1900 scrolls that I purchased for $66 yesterday for example. Try finding anything similar from China. You won’t be able to.

well done, I particularly like the landscape scroll.
Japanese art is severely under rated since many years. It is a non sense, ridiculous prices for really fine items. On the opposite side, Chinese art is crazy over rated.
I do collect Chinese ceramics but I have also a few Japanese porcelain that I bought because of the rarity or high quality, and well below their potential values.
Although out of the main interest of my collection, I am just keeping them because I am sure that if I will list them on ebay I will most probably get less than what I paid them.
Better to keep them for a more rationale period.

The subject matter appears to be a Chinese royal procession, although the cloud layers do have a Japanese feel to them. Honestly, the colors appear to be filled in overlapping the black outlines similar to a woodblock print and not artistically to my taste. There could be some age, but not much expected wear to be found.
