My last post about an estate sale didn't quite work out for those reading (but you do have to get to these sales very early ... often the night before), but I thought I'd post this sale. If these chairs are huanghuali, even modern, they are quite valuable.
https://www.estatesales.net/TX/Austin/78703/3262500
Bryker Wood is a very exclusive neighborhood.... I don't see you see many houses for less than $1 million USD. The photo of the chairs look like this...
However, the lighting and pine floors is making everything look very orange (I think). So, I cleaned up the photo a bit and this is what I think the chairs actually look like....
Official's hat chairs are famously made from huanghuali from the 17th and into the 18th c., but the seats are matted. As you can see, these seats do not have matting, but it appears to have the wood framing to hold matting in place, so perhaps the matting was removed.
The back splat is in three parts, which generally means an 18th c. or later example, and the flanges on the left/right back supports are something that I have not been able to verify if they were made in early Qing periods, or later.
What I like about the chairs as shown in the photo is the color and tight grain throughout, the dark and light highlights of the back support panels, and the smoothness of the carving.
The address will be released tomorrow (Tuesday) morning around 9am. If I lived within a few hours, I'd drive over to see if the chairs are visible through the window (they are right in front of the window, but the curtain is down). If so, take a few pictures and post them (or email me) to discuss.
If they are genuine, I would stay until tomorrow to ensure you're first in line....I figure they'll be priced under $1000, so an absolute bargain, even for potentially 20th c. HH chairs.
Good luck!
They also have this kang table....19th c., most likely hongmu with a strong grain, but could also be huanghuali.
@greeno107 I have a question you mention that the hardcore resellers sit outside the night before. I’m curious how that works where I live that would get the cops called on you?
@lotusblack It's rare, but the cops sometimes do come...it has happend to me several times...no big deal if you don't have any criminal record, or contraban. Sometimes they ask you to leave, but most of the time if you explain that you need to stay to hold your spot, that you won't disturb any neighbors, and that you'll make sure as others show up, that they'll be respectfull of the neighbors, too, then they usually just let you be.
Generally, the estate sale seller has met with all of the neighbors. Experienced sellers will tell the neighbors to expect cars to show up early if they feel the sale has a lot to offer.
My guess is that the seller has told everyone in the neighborhood...it's looks to be one of the oldest houses in the area...family has lived there for 35 years....the neighbors know.
BUT, what I like to do is when I show up, make myself visible....when neighbors walk by, walk their dogs, ask you what you're doing, etc, is to engage them in a very forward & friendly manner. If you look like you're not hiding your presence, then most folks will leave you alone.
Dress casual, but conservative. If you smoke, don't leave your butts on the sidewalk or wherever they fall.
Leave a marker at the door...I like to leave a folding chair.
I like to take photos of my car in front of the house that shows that I'm the only one there...first to show up...just in case there is some disagreement later that needs to be worked out with the seller of the sale (proof you were first).
Stay off the property until the day of the sale...it's tempting to peak through windows, but that will get the neighbors wondering what you're up to. A quick peak might be fine, but don't linger around the sides and back of the house.
When others show up, start a 'courtesy list' where you keep peoples names and number in line to keep things organized, but make sure everyone knows that your list is not the official numers, and that they need to stay and hold their spot in line.
In my car, I bring a cooler with drinks and snacks...no heavy food. I also bring emergency accomidations, a bucket/tupperware/bags wet wipes in case I absolutely have to go.....cover the windows with a towel, blanket, and be quick about it.
Bring a book....try not to run your car battery dry.... stretch as often as you care to...try to rest in the day hours...stay awake and alert in the evening when most of your competitors will show up and try and snipe your spot.
I've shown the chairs to a regular client of mine...he thinks they could be HH as I do, but we're not yet sure of the age. But, there's real money on the table for the chairs if they're HH, even if they are 20th c.
Good luck....you can call/text/email me anytime if you go.
Potentially HH. But you would need to handle them in person. The image is useless.
Mark
@imperialfinegems I wouldn’t say worthless, but inconclusive.
The pattern on the back splat looks very much like HH… compare to this example sold by Christie’s….
The issue fir me is the variation in the design… beautifully done, but I can’t find an exact match.
However, the address has been released - the house is not for sale, but valued between $2-4 million.
I’d say it’s worth making the trip if your within driving distance.
Property owner was Harriet Rutland…. Take a look at her obituary… quite accomplished and a world traveler. Starting to regret not flying out…
