Sunday was one of my best days at a live in person auction and Google lens was my hero. So I am a lot like Peter as I own many different genres of art to make my home very artistic no ikea. So I went to my local live auction house to their end of the year sale which is always the best one of the year. It’s been this way for as long as I’ve been going there 20 years now. They had a lot of antiques and very high end artwork. 10 original Dali prints of medium edition sizes 150 plus. All of the big competitors well everyone were was on Google lens for everything. Most of the people were dealers and entry level collectors. When I showed up I instantly was drawn to a print that wasn’t even on the auction listing and got a heart beating fast feeling. Everyone knows me so I can’t show my competition that I am interested so looking it over closely is out of the question. So I started to listen to everyone looking at the print on Google lens but keep hearing it’s a fake it doesn’t look like the online originals from any of the majors. So I started a conversation with a few dealers what do you guys think. They all said it’s a fake here is what it should really look like do you see the back ground is missing. I did notice the background was indeed missing. So the auction begins and I’m showing interest in the Dali’s everyone noticed and the mad bidder were on. I inspected the Dalis they all were authentic and sold at a value. But my eye was on the grand prize. I made three attempts to buy it but was outbid three times you are bidding for choice not the piece. Was very nervous that someone would caught on but they just were after the Dali’s. Two Dal’s left and the piece I wanted so I had to make my move and I did and I got very aggressive finally on the 4 attempt I won my piece. And was a little nervous but my experience in fine arts collecting and my personal like for the said artist gave me the personal knowledge to know the print was not only authentic but was missing the mentioned background for a reason. Years of research finally paid off. The reason the print was different missing the background it was an artist proof and this artist always left it out on his very limited editions of 15 artist proofs. The artist is Joan Miro. To own a 2 of 15 artist proof of this artist is extremely impressive as they are never ever for sale unless you what to pay 5 figures. It is now hanging and once I hear back from the foundation I will post the results. Even though it’s not Asian art Miro was fascinated with Japanese art and calligraphy a lot of his artwork incorporates these traits.
Nice buy lets hope the signature is genuine . Bc thats a concern with artist proof graphics not all of them had been signed and sometimes a dealer added a signature later . However i wish you all the best with it greetings from Switzerland Martin
@webboy your right and Dali signed blanks sheets and later we’re used by forgers. In my opinion with a number this low 15 lithographs even though I have the gallery provenance and purchase date I will need the foundation authentication for sure. Everything is faked in the art world no exceptions.
