Or is it just a modern fake? I remember I came across a very similar bowl back at Yokohama International Auction that was dated 17/18th ct. but it will take hours to relocate that one since the sale was back in 2017. I just got to remember these because I just picked up a ru-style washer that is possibly an Qing dynasty copy. Beware with this seller, I have already seen many things falsely declared by him/her.
He/she bought many items from the Vermeer collection when auctioned by Brunk auction, and did use Vermeer stickers onto things that were not coming from his collection.
The same happens with this bowl, he/she is declaring that it belongs from the Vermeer collection. I am absolutley sure that it is not true. Hence... hence obvious conclusion.

Yes, you have talked about this before. But Joanies have also recently sold some crackle ware pieces that to my eye looked authentic and for a fraction of the price you would pay for similar things at Sotheby's. But then again - I see a lot of very convincingly looking crackle pieces that I'm afraid of buying because the risk of them being fakes. I actually purchased the ru-style washer by a mistake.

One thing that I have noticed of the genuine Ru pieces is that they have three spur marks that are always white and equally spaced, which is clearly not the case in the example shown. A good example is shown in the British Museum collection.

Negative. I've done research of this already. They can be white, beige, reddish brown, grey and black. I have a link where you can see bases of several ru pieces with different colored spur marks. They can also have more than three spur marks. The washer I just got in have five spur marks. I'll see if I can post the link tomorrow.

I have read that there are only 80 known pieces of genuine Ru ware, so I guess that with your washer there are now 81!

Hello all,
I would like to say that clayandbrush is absolutely right in stating that that bowl did not come from the Vermeer estate. Mike and I became friends after I contacted him to vet a vase that I was considering for purchase from another seller near him in California. We both had an absolute love of Chinese monochromes and would talk for hours about the subject. Some years after he moved to Atlanta, I visited him for several days so that he could examine an item from my collection that I was trying to place with one of major auction houses. I spent days looking and handling his extensive collection of Chinese ceramics. He didn’t have that many Song or earlier pieces since his primary interest was in 18th century monochromes. I believe he told me that Alan (his deceased partner) was the one who collected the early things. I never saw that bowl in Mike’s house and he had everything out on display in room after room of his home. Over the years, we talked extensively about his most prized pieces in his collection and he never once mentioned owning a Ru ware bowl. Christie’s sold some of his collection in 2015 and Brunk Auctions sold a larger part of the collection sometime later. That ‘Ru bowl’ was not in either sale!

Apart from viewing the Ru ware pieces from the British Museum online so as to be able to see the bases, I have also seen them on display in the David collection gallery and so I have a basic appreciation of these exquisite ceramics, but thank you for the additional information.
