Picked this up for 100 USD today. Does anyone have any idea as to approx. date. Looks 19th C. to me. Not sure. Could be earlier, could be later. Need help. Couldn't pass up for 100 bucks. Looks like similar pieces sell in the 500 to 1000 dollar range. All comments and educational info. greatly appreciated. Sincerely, JT

Hi Jamie,

In my opinion it's highly probable to be a little later than the period you suggested. I think early 20th century.

Just my thoughts my friend.

Mark is correct in that these are not 100 years old…. Actually they appear fairly new.

If you want to understand the age of furniture, then REMEMBER, prior to 1900 furniture making was done by craftsman who dedicated their lives to the trade.

So, the carving, choice of wood, and quality of construction should reflect the highest level of skill.

Now, with the technical aspects of determining age, look for these clues….

1) signs of professional repair.
2) wear to the feet

3) Turn it upside down and look for changes in wood color that takes place in wood exposed to light vs. underwood that never sees the light of day

4) Look at the underside for old hardware or lacquered cloth used to reinforce the panels and joints

5) Look for writing (specifically numbers) used to keep the order of the leg construction … Chinese furniture was often dissembled and reassembled when transported.

I would say fairly new also. It looks like a Frankenstein chair using reclaimed wood and mics pieces. If you bought them for decoration, you did good on the price. If you bought them as antique, you paid about 100 to much. Best to look at it like you cant buy a chair at a store for 100.

A great educational experience. Sometimes I have to make judgment calls on the spot with little to no knowledge. I was willing to venture a 100 on it but no more. I already sold the chair for 225 so its all good. JT
