Hi all -

I was extremely privileged to attend a handling session at the V&A museum, London recently. Those attending had been asked to select three/four objects before hand …

Attached images/brief descriptions of some of the pieces seen/handled …

1&2; Yongle period blue and white bowl …

3,4,5; Xuande mark and period blue monochrome dish.
This blue glaze type is called ‘baoshilan’, meaning sapphire or more usually ‘jilan’, meaning sacrificial in Chinese, and would have been order for Imperial rituals at the Tiantan (Alter of Heaven). Xuande pieces are particularly beautiful, and this was a superb example.

6,7,8,9; Xuande m/p blue and white dish, decorated with five clawed dragons amongst paler blue waves …

10,11,12,13; Kangxi period bowl, decorated with ducks within a lotus pond …

14,15&16; Qianlong m/p vase, main body decorated in enamels with butterflies, iris and other flowers against a scratched purplish/crimson lattice pattern.
This type of decorative style is referred to as ‘ci tai yang cai jin shang tian hua’ in the palace records, and were made between 1741 and 1743.

What a lovely way to spend a few hours!  Thank you for sharing the photos.  They are all wonderful items; the "birds"bowl is so beautifully painted: I haven't seen a Kangxi piece like that before.

Beautiful--don't know which one I like best.  That blue bowl is luminous.

Thank you for sharing. I guess I wouldn't have recognized the bowl as Kangxi had I seen it elsewhere. The facial expression of the flying duck made me smile.

@julia @shinigami

Hi Julia and Birgit -

Kangxi bowls decorated with this ducks/lotus pond design are a rare but known type, although the overall painting quality does vary on published examples …

Attached images/descriptions of two such pieces sold at auction;

1; Lot 1382, Christies New York, 16/17 September 2010 …

2; Lot 835, Christies New York, 19 September 2014 …

I understand that another example is to offered, ex Au Bak Ling Collection, Christies Hong Kong next month …

Stuart,

You lucky dog!  You are handling the ‘best of the best’.  These types of sessions are the best examples of learning about genuine antique ceramics.  Another advantage of living in a major city.

@ming1449 Stuart, thank you so much for sharing this experience with us. And what exquisite taste you have to choose the examples you did. I'm particularly fond of the Xuande pieces. John

Hi all -

A pleasure to share, and my thanks for all your thoughts and opinions, which are much appreciated …

A confession; as those attending  were restricted to 3/4 objects, the Kangxi ducks/lotus bowl and Qianlong enamelled vase were others choices, not mine personally(although we all had ‘a little chat’ before regarding object selections)!!😉

The Yongle b/w bowl and two Xuande dishes were my choices, along with this large early Zhengtong period guan, beautifully decorated with the ‘four accomplishments’, zither, go, calligraphy and painting … Attached images with go and zither scenes …

As occasionally happens after such, we were asked which piece, if allowed, we would ‘take home’! Given the objects, an incredible difficult choice but, personally, I would have chosen the Xuande blue monochrome dish …
‘Super apex’, as the gentleman sitting next to commented after closely examining - to which I concurred!!😊😊😊…

The blue monochrome, of course!  Love your choice.  Here are some other, later examples.
