These metal covers usually come off with a little gentle, even pressure. But I'm reluctant to put much pressure on this vase, for obvious reasons. I've pushed as hard as I dare, but the cover remains. It's loose and spins, but won't come off because the lip is still curled in. And ideas? I have it warming in the sun now to see if that will help.
That's a pretty vase. What's the bottom look like? As for the metal top, maybe you could use some metal cutters to snip some sections out from the top down to weaken it then it might be easier to manipulate off.

No luck so far. The gentleman refuses to remove his hat.
I tried slowly heating it with a heat gun. This made it slightly more flexible, but not enough to remove. The very bottom lip curls inward, and the lip of the vase has a slight curl outward. They're interlocking just enough that I wad afraid any pressure could chip the vase.
I tried using some large wire snips, but they weren't large enough. The metal is quite thick. But John maybe actual tin snips would work. I have an idea for a custom vice-type contraption that could in theory bend it off without putting any pressure on the vase.
Here's the bottom:
The foot looks hand trimmed. It has "Made in Japan" in three (!) places. It's very small in blue at 1 o'clock, on the contact surface. Then again at 10 o'clock, impressed into the cavity. And it was also on that stamp, though most of it's missing from getting drilled.
Any thoughts on age? I was thinking mid 1950 to early 1960s, but don't really know. Oddly, the power cord and hardware all looked a bit older, 1940s even.

How interesting having the origin 3 times. The size and shape of the imprinted letters may help date it. I imagine the paper one may be a shop label?
I think it is probably as old as the electrical bits. There is a site which dates electric plugs and possibly cords, but I don't remember if I saved it. I will look later.
I have in the past used a fine tooth straight metal saw blade to saw outward in few directions from the center, it takes a while so as not to bend the blade and only using pulling strokes. By the time you get to the edge it should be weak enough to pull off the lip.

Thanks everybody! I'd love more opinions on possible age. To my eye they look earlier 20th century, earlier than 50s-60s.
@julia Thanks Julia, my dog enjoys sniffing all the old things I bring home. I imagine with proper training he could sniff a vase and be like "Japanese, Kyoto region, early 20th century, was once in same room as a cheeseburger."
I'd love to see that page on dating old plugs and hardware if you find it!
