I confirmed that my big previously posted turquoise is from Tibet, when I purchased it, I thought it was a Southwestern piece of turquoise. Bought the dragon collar from Indonesia for it, since I think the bird on the back is supposed to be a phoenix, it looks nice with the bird facing forward too? The silver dollar for size comparison was a gift from my Mom and I used my allowance to buy the coin holder and chain in the nineteen-fifties. The Roman mite was a birthday gift, as was the Napoleon, Joaquin Phoenix is going to be Napoleon in the new movie releasing at Thanksgiving, we'll see how he compares to Brando in Desiree. My concentration as a history major was world history (Euro-centric) and I especially enjoyed the French Revolution and Napoleon. The boy King Louis XV 1719 was inherited, "apres moi le deluge," boy you were correct, it was not Marie Antoinette that practically bankrupted the country. I am reading the History of France by John Julius Norwich, son of Duff Cooper and Lady Diana Manners Cooper, Darling Monster, was a fine book by him about the letters he received from his Mom, while he was in New York during WWII. Also reading A Forger's Tale, the Confessions of the Bolton Forger, which is a fine non-fiction read. I think the turquoise is probably from the sixties. Happy Thanksgiving and I'm looking forward to seeing the tablescapes, we will be alone for Thanksgiving so we will just watch football and dine in front of the television, I am sorry that our children could not be here, but so old that it might be fun to skip the work, ah the barbarian life. Sharon
Nice collection, Sharon. Thanks for sharing.
I like Phoenix but I think he's too old to play Napoleon. And Josephine was a few years older in real life, unlike the film. That said, I'll probably see it. (Side note: I may be a relative through marriage - a distant aunt of mine is Elizabeth Patterson of Baltimore who married Jerome Bonaparte.)
The more one learns of Napoleon the more one respects his people skills. He was smart enough to pay attention and listen to people, always aware there was something he could learn from others. And he was gracious with the ladies, at least according to Henriette-Lucy du Pin.
The Canton B&W ware will be featured at our T-Day table. I'll try to remember to share photos before the food is gobbled up.
Happy Thanksgiving!
-Steve
@steve One of my earliest collectible books is a biography of Betsy Patterson, it is the only collectible book that I added my name to as owner (in pencil) because the previous book collectors had added their names, the one previous to me had purchased it in the forties in Kansas City. Nappy forced the divorce to make Jerome marry a royal so he could be made King of Westphalia, however Betsy's father did not just fall off a turnip truck and it was a Catholic wedding and it produced a son, who had an interesting career under Napoleon III. The Nap did not have a great deal of talent in the rest of his family, Lucien was the most able and he refused to divorce his wife in order to be a royal. Napoleon has kept me entertained for years, have a dual set of Jefferson and Napoleon portraits that hung in the Cafe Louis at Laclede's landing in St. Louus in the sixties and a 1904 program with Jefferson and Napoleon lithograph from the St. Louis Workd's Fair. Friends visiting have asked me why Nap is everywhere in my house, "because he was fascinating and when playing the what if game, one wonders if he might have succeeded in creating a a united Europe and perhaps preventing both World Wars, a result of Victoria and Albert planning to seat their descendants on thrones, that did not workout well either, but yes he was a tyrant." I look forward to the tablescape. Sharon
He could control most of Europe but not his family, that is true.
That's great you have Mrs Bonaparte's biography. Is it good?
@steve P.S. Managed to find it on the shelf it is Madame Bonaparte by Eugene L. Didier, published New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 743 and 745 Broadway, 1879. Probably not worth much, try Abebooks, I was wrong about two things, the list of previous owners, Thomas James 1890 (already just an old book), Lucy Jawel 1925, and not Kansas City, it states John N. Weiss Book Fair St. Louis May '61, and then me and not in pencil 1997, guess I thought it did not matter since the other names were listed in ink. It is interesting that it is Josephine's descendants that presently sit on thrones (Sweden, Denmark and Norway) through her son Eugene. Desiree Clery's son Oscar married Josephine's descendant another Josephine. Quel surprise, I have other old Napoleon books, one with uncut pages, but I bought and read a paperback copy, so I could leave the pages uncut.
P.S. Yes, it was good, not very long and I remember reading about a book that came out about her a few years ago. The old book covered the only time she ever saw Jerome again, many years later visiting Europe, he and second wife showed up at a museum she was visiting, no interaction, Jerome was weak.
P.P.S. There is a nice looking copy on Abebooks with the Aesthetic Movement cover for 20.00 plus 4.95 shipping from Riverside books in Saginaw, Michigan, the endpapers have a William Moriss look to them, it appears to be in a better condition than mine. It would look pretty setting out on a table, I have a 1901 commemorative book on Queen Victoria with an inset of the famous Grandmothery portrait photo on the Morris looking cover that I displayed on my Eastlake parlor table, until I started worrying about the sun damaging the cover, so that resides in a bookshelf inside an acid free cover from Broadart, as does Madame Bonaparte. It's not worth much either except as a memory of a good bookhunt day in the seventies.
@steve Riverhorse books, but it is an exlibrary editon, which means it has a library stamp on the flyleaf and a library pocket on inside of backcover, which would be cool if jf contains the card with names of when and by who checked out the old book. There is a less atteactive first English edition for 66.00, plus higher shipping, it also was published in 1879.

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
