Having gained a self taught appreciation of Chinese watercolour paintings over several years I found Mr Comb's recent video about Republic Period porcelain fascinating, as I now have a better understanding of the quality of decoration of porcelain from this period based on my knowledge of classical watercolours.
As a test I searched eBay after watching the video and by coincidence noticed a superbly decorated vase currently listed.
It would seem that I am not the only person to recognise the exquisite painting of this vase.

Had a quick look, it appears to be very nicely done. Not had a chance to watch the video, yet, sounds like it is very good. Maybe something to have with my coffee, tomorrow, and then I will look again at this vase to see what I have learnt.
To me this vase does not look right for republican , it could be recent - the goats are too naturalistic , the wool a strange colour of pink, the flowers are not well-shaded, the poem/inscription is not artistically written but very regular and plain, the greens of the foliage quite muddy ..... just my thoughts

I like the painting style too, the quality is quite high. In his video Peter says it’s important to look at pine needles etc. and see if they are carefully executed, and they are in this case.
What I don’t like are the many black spots on the bottom. In Republic they could do better. A good painter wouldn’t work on an inferior body. There’s even a burning hole on the foot.
So the vase is possibly modern but nicely done and could be tomorrow‘s antique.

This is where I get confused. I watched Peter’s video twice, and this vase looks very good. But the comments above cast doubt upon it, rightly so, I assume. I wonder if Peter will spot this thread and give advice. I agree with Birgit, even if it is recent, it is quite nice and should have value in the future.

I also noticed the imperfections on the base of this vase and as a novice in regards to porcelain I am confused as to why such high quality decoration would be applied to this vase no matter in which period it was made.
I particularly like the painting of the tree, especially the scale as it works it's way up the vase.
I had originally considered putting a bid in, but before posting this I decided that it wasn't the sort of piece that I normally look for and I assume that the successful bidder will have much deeper pockets than mine. However, it will be interesting to see how much it sells for.

Well, just watched the video, Peter if you see this, thank you so much! I am always bowled over by your efforts to help us all learn. What an amazing resource this site is!
As for the goat vase, whereas the goats do remind me of Republic painting-style of the faces of old men with beards and on the whole the decoration appears well-executed, does some of the white background appear to have that grey/browny colour, that Peter mentioned, mixed in?
I can see Tam's point about the pink and the overall muddiness but on the other hand, I don't necessarily find them harmonious as a whole, just a bit dingy. Were the photos taken with a flash - the odd bits of dazzle struck me and the fact that all his other items are photographed outside - if so might that affect the colours?
What I really don't like is the base and foot rim. It looks wrong for Republic and I can't recall having seen it on late Qing. What are all those black dots? It looks like someone has emptied a vanilla pod. Also the hole. I haven't really seen a firing flaw like that. I agree with you all: why would an artist do such a detailed painting on a less than perfect item?
That is quite a lot of wear on the mouth, too, as though it had been stood upside down and deliberately rubbed as Peter says happens to the bases.
So my conclusion, like everyone else's, is that I have some doubts!

After a closer look at the pictures, I have to agree with Tam and Julia. Although I like the vase, the painting is not up to snuff with a good Republican piece. For the reasons pointed out already, and in particular for me, the way the pine needles, although painted well, are colored in by just slapping the color on, instead of carefully painting each needle. And the branches don’t really go in and out of view as they should in a better vase, as Peter pointed out in his video. Probably modern in my amateur opinion. Todd

It looks as though there is less wear to the base than there is to the rim? I also don’t like the red goats. I think the tree and branches seem well painted. That hole in the bottom almost looks like it has been lamped. Very strange.
