Hi all,
I hope y'all are doing well. It's been a while since I've posted, but I just wanted to share some photos I took this summer of the Dallas Museum of Art and the Peacock Room at the Freer. I took more, but it turns out I'm not that great with photos, so I hope these are good enough. Naturally, I made a beeline for the Tang Lokapala posted by @William a while back. Interestingly, the Dallas Museum of Art is also home to a large collection of Chinese export porcelain from the Reves collection, which is exhibited in a domestic setting, similarly to the Peacock Room.
John
Years ago, I was able go back into the storage room at the Freer to see the Chinese ceramic collection not currently on display. Looked and handled a lot of their Song ceramics. It was a wonderful experience. One can usually email the curator for an appointment and it also helps if the visit includes a cash donation.
The Dallas Museum of Art display of the Reves Collection is a fine depiction of the eclectic mix of antiques style of home decor that Peter has mentioned in recent videos. Good to hear from you, any new black ships acquisitions? Sharon
Hi John,
Thank you for sharing these. I always enjoy some good armchair travel! I was delighted to be reminded of the splendors of the Peacock Room. I've never been to Dallas but am looking forward to doing so some day.
Last month I was able to visit the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and some other places and gobbled up the Chinese art and pottery. I was tickled at the Brown House museum in Providence, RI to see, proudly displayed, several Canton covered dishes and platters (and similar ones were spotted on the tables in the House of the Seven Gables in Salem and in the Elms, Newport). A reminder that the humble blue and white Canton can have pride of place in any distinguished home!
I hope you don't mind but I'll share a few photos from the Boston Museum of Fine Art and the tidbits of information I paraphrased from the placards:
This is a rare bronze figurine from the Warring States Period. One thought to represent an animal trainer, now it is recognized as originally a lamp (the jade birds were mistakenly added by curators). Most all of the bronzes from that period were ritual vessels for food and wine making this quite unusual.
I was struck by this handsome Tang marbleized earthenware plate.
This charming Yongzheng dish depicts Mi Fu (1052-1107) showing his passion for rocks by worshipping a lovely example in his garden, where he addressed it as "Elder Brother Rock."
Finally there is this cup and saucer from a large 1850-51 commission for the Sassoon family who were living in Mumbai at the time, probably for a wedding. The Hebrew inscriptions read: "Good health and life" and "Drink your wine with a glad heart." For all my Jewish friends, I hope you had a happy Rosh Hashanah!

I got to examine & handle this beauty at the Freer! Jun ware vase, Northern Song or Jin.
Nothing like a exciting experience that is also educational. 🤩
@william, @sharonp, and @steve,
William - That might be something I'm going to have to experience before I move away from DC! There's no better educational experience than that I would think. Thanks for sharing that!
Sharon - It's nice hearing from you too, Sharon! Unfortunately, my collection has reached a bit of a standstill since I've been keeping up with my searches less, but now that I'm a 3L, I think I have more time to look around!
Steve - Thanks for sharing those photos! I've been meaning to take a road trip northeast, so I just might add that to my list of stops. I'm really interested in that faux marble charger. I wonder what sort of techniques they used to create that effect? I've ramped up my pottery hobby lately in my short absence from the forum and would love to find out more about that. I recall seeing an 18th-century gravy boat from the ShangriLa guys with a similar effect. I think this is a great time to visit some museums if you feel comfortable since many of the special exhibits, like the Peacock Room, are single-family entries for the time being. I can't wait until November when the Sackler opens up here. I'll share photos there too!
Kindly,
John
Yes, the marble effect is incredible. There wasn't much information on the technique in the museum, unfortunately.
I look forward to seeing some of your photos when you go. Museums are doable these days because everyone can keep their masks on and it's a little easier to keep the crowds thin. (Although my friends said they went to the Basquiat show a couple of weeks earlier and had to leave because it was so crowded! - My friend is nursing his aged father who is immune compromised.)
@bartholin John, a 3L God bless and keep you. Is that light at the end of the tunnel, no it's Barbri. Sharon

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink.
