Dear members ,iam happy to be back ,after i had longer been absent from this forum .
Yesterday this small Vase ( not one of my items ) sold at a online auction here in Switzerland . Almost 15000 dollars whas the winning bid . ( you have to scoll down a bit since its a closed auction)
heigth 15 cm , no special provenance .
My guess its an early republic piece , totally overpriced . ...but maybee i my lack of knowlege can bee improoved by a member of this forum ..thanxs
Welcome back, Martin! An interesting vase, in my opinion late Republic and probably by a master painter. Mark might know more about it. Funny to read in the lower part how someone said to the seller: I give you 50 francs for it, and the seller said OK, but 10 minutes later he changed his mind.
Birgit
The link did not work for me however for everyone who wants to see - simply follow the link and enter the item # in the search box - 1197489624 - this should pull it up.
I agree with you Martin, that seems kind of excessive, however Republic pieces have been really climbing up there in price, especially ones as nice as this if by a known maker. It doesn't appear signed (other than the Qianlong mark), however I am curious if the style is a known artist. I am not seeing the size, but based on the images, looks to be around 6-10 inches.
The painting is much better than this example at Brunk's, that brought just under $3K:
https://brunkauctions.com/lot/small-chinese-republic-period-porcelain-bottle-4089596
and is closer to this pair at Christie's that brought just under $14K:
(I think the painting on your example is better than this pair)
Or this bit larger one from Christie's:
Curious to see our other fellow forum member's thoughts, but looks to be a very high quality Republic piece that brought what it is worth!
All the best,
Justin
@jg1133 dear justin and birgit thank for youre comments i found one with almost same use of colors and styleof painting sold a bonhams for 5 k https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21821/lot/9498
@shinigami yeah the comments below are interesting ..by the way reminds me of a Ivory brushpot with fine detailed etching ...i spoted it just seconds after it had been put up for auction ...i asked the seller for a "buy it now price" and left my phone number ,knowing they gonna delete the auction bc its forbidden to sell ivory on this plattform... about one hour later the guy called me and asked how much i would offer i told him 120.- he accepted ..but told me he had to ask his sister as well bc the piece had been left by their father ...well i allready knew thats it ,now brushpot for me.
They found another familliy member that had a personal emotional attachment to the pot (Bullshit ).
But hey what can you do ...you have to try sometimes
@webboy I had someone do that with an early American painted blanket chest. All of a sudden family members come out of the woodwork wanting it, even though it was listed on Craigslist for $200 😆
I very much enjoyed this research and seeing this vase - thank you so much for sharing!
Justin
Hi Martin,
Outstanding price indeed for a small vase.
The buyers thought that this particular vase was by Wang Qi (1884 - 1937). A well-known and very sought after artist from the Republic period and member of the famed eight friends of zushan.
In my opinion it's not by this master. The quality just isn't there. I also suspect that this could be a well made copy of sorts. And highly probable to be not from the Republic period. However the images are not clear enough.
Wang Qi is very heavily copied. Here is a genuine one signed and dated to 1928.
The depictions are that of the demon Zhong Kui. Various depictions were a favorite scene for the master.
Mark
Update: I am still unable to post or attach images. But if members wish to they can Google search works by said master and clearly see the difference.
@imperialfinegems Good day Mark ...and thank you ,for commenting on this .
i found some orig. samples of wang qi ...very similar looking thanks for solving the puzzle.
best regards Martin
@webboy Yes, good to hear from you Martin. I hope the issues with posting photos is resolved soon, so that you can show us your acquisitions during your absense. I am reduced to watching some fellow clean a rug on YouTube, it is oddly relaxing. Welcome back. Sharon
@sharonp thank you sharon for the welcome , i did a lot of shopping in the past months, running up and down , trying to aquire a varia of old and new. i did buy a lot of bulky stuff so people have to pick up the things they bougth... brings some traffic to my Storehouse.
So i roll the dice. heres a link to my Ebay Auctions . https://www.ebay.com/sch/swiss-army-knife/m.html?item=224838665051&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.m3561.l2562 ..and another one to my favorite Swiss online Auction Ricardo.

Good to be back ,...did he got that carpet clean ...i often watch the Salvage hunter drew pritchard ...very entertaining.
cheers Martin
@webboy Yes, you have been busy, good luck with the sales. He did get the rug clean. It was a small Chinese wool rug 2'x3', similar to one I walked around with in Beijing 1992, the colors matched my color scheme for our bedroom in Jakarta. My favorite comment on the fellow cleaning the rug was the following pithy observation: cost of rug 35.00, cost of cleaning 295.00. People are funny, they could have cleaned it the same way on their back deck with a scrub brush and a garden hose. I have watched Drew Pritchard from time to time, especially enjoy the ones where he goes to old houses.
@sharonp Ha reminds me of the carpet scam. Some Dealers in Carpets offer big money for them...if only they had been clean ...thats normally it.
The cleaning bill exeds the carpets value by far and people leave them behind for free. Happens many times.
On Pritchard i just bougth this large Printers Sideboard 2.5 meters long
it had ended up with a Blacksmith its dated 1880 ...unlike Pritchards i dont have a team of restorers an renovaters ... but when the sales are low in summer i have a go .
