Hi,
this week I‘m in London for a museum and shopping tour. Yesterday I visited Guest and Gray and bought a Japanese plate I will show you when I get back home. Also I couldn’t resist to buy a Hoi An jarlet from a nice lady in the same antique market who had about a hundred of them. This means my budget is almost exhausted.
Now I would like to visit a market to look at some cheaper stuff, maybe some nice English vintage porcelain. Was at Camden Market yesterday but it wasn’t what it used to be 20 years ago. Maybe someone has been to London lately and has an idea for me where to go?
Birgit
Hi Birgit,
I did the same a couple of years ago. I was very disappointed with the weekly markets. Bermondsey was very small and Spitalfields was dire. But maybe that was just a bad day?
When I go again, I think I will spend time at the Antiques centres like Alfie’s instead. It’s always a hit and miss affair but maybe the odds are better in centres with lots of dealers selling all sorts of things? It’s still a case of right place right time, I guess.
Good luck!
Nic
Hi Birgit - Portobello market on Saturday mornings is worth a look, but you need to get there fairly earlier, I go every month or so and get there by 8 o’clo’clock. Certainly not what it use to be, there are only a few genuine/good dealers left, so be careful. But a great place just to wonder round and look. Happy hunting!!?
Thanks for your ideas. Unfortunately I have to leave early on Saturday but I have been to Alfie. The place is a labyrinth. I found a yellow jar with applied leaves and a crane. Those are often faked but it looks ok for Republic in my eyes and is undamaged except a small old chip on the foot.
By the way, in the V&A museum I saw a little girl on a Kangxi vase.
Birgit
Bridget, if the decoration on the yellow vase was flatter I would have thought moorcroft..
With my smartphone I never manage to insert Ebay links. There’s a vase in the same style offered as Ebay no. 192385540116
The seller at Alfied also had a green jar that was larger and more expensive, but I thought the yellow one was nicer anyway
Birgit
Dear Birgit,
Good find !
Dear Nic
yes ShangriLa have one on ebay at the moment.
Michael
Thanks Nic, that was the correct name for this style, I couldn’t remember. Without access to my books I‘m rather helpless ?
Thanks Michael for the link. I was afraid I had paid way too much with £180, but when I see their price I think about going back and buying the green jar too.
Birgit
All,
Wang BingRong was a real person he started as a bamboo carver, and graduated to porcelain very successfully. He managed to use wood carvers tricks with under cutting to give depth and shadow. Can't recall his dates but think he passed away at the end of the nineteenth century. He has been copied ever since I notice that ShangriLa have theirs list as 'style of '. I have seen some awful fakes where the decoration is stuck on and not carved.
Michael
Hi Giovanni,
as you said in the other thread the turquoise Wang Bing Rong jars were fakes, would you please look at the above yellow one that I just bought? Of course it’s only in the style of Wang Bing Rong but as I held it in my hands it seemed ok for Republic to me. It’s not that garish like modern fakes, in fact the colors are a bit more muted than on the photo.
By the way today I was in an antique shop in Portobello road and bought a green victorian plate with vine leaf pattern. Always wanted one and they were quite affordable.
Camden Passage was a disappointment. There was a shop with everything my heart craved for, but it was closed and I could only see the beautiful things through the window.
Birgit
Dear Brigit,
You have asked Giovanni to look at your vase for an assessment I will leave that to him as he has undoubtedly more knowledge of ceramics than me. I have had an interest in Wang Bigrong for a number of years due to my interest in carved items. When you posted your description you said applied decoration, in your past posts on many threads you have shown you have a good knowledge on Asian ceramics so I assume you know the difference between applied decoration and carved decoration. If your find is applied decoration it will be in the style of Wang Bing Rong. From your photo's you example looks to be good quality and you may have a bargain , especially compared to the one I posted from Holland. There are some terrible slip cast productions in awful colors out there I think Giovanni has mentioned them in another thread yours one certainly is not one of them. Giovanni will no doubt give us all some better information when he comes in
Not much is Known about the artist in question there are expert disputes about his mark and even if he had a mark. I have posted a couple of links with pictures and some information on the subject.
Michael.

Thanks a lot Michael! I’m sure it’s not original Wang Bing Rong, just something in his style. When I get home I’ll take better pictures, also from the foot.
Birgit
