I'm from a location in New Brunswick Canada, where the appraisers are not plentiful or knowledgeable. As an example, I've been advised that Chinese vases without marks on the bottoms are fakes which is obviously not true after watching a few of Peter Combs videos. I was told the vase I bought was 400 years old and there use to be papers for the appraisal and insurance but she (the daughter) was unable to find them after her father passed; and no local appraiser would give her a quote because there was no marks on it. There's also a small round indentation on the bottom that I don't recall seeing in examples in the couple videos of Peter's I've watched and theres also peppering on the inside, is there a date reference to this circle or inside peppering? Also, the crazing is under the glaze. Could this be a sign of a fake?
This is a fairly modern Satsuma style vase, probably Chinese made (but Satsuma is a Japanese pottery). No value.
Yes, welcome Angela. It does look like a Japanese base, but it definitely is not anywhere near 400 years old, being charitable, let's say family legend was very exaggerated. When Julia awakens she will know whether this is Japanese satsuma or a Chinese copy. I think the moriage is in too intact shape to have very much age and the sunburnt faces resemble Chinese later Satsuma. I agree with Steve and Tim. Sharon
Hi Angela
I understand you have some reservations about this vase, it comes across in your message, and you thinking that this is not adding up.
First, it is not true that vases without marks on their base are fake. That is not true for satsuma, or any Japansese or Chinese porcelain or pottery. In fact it is backmarks that can be very misleading at times. So the good news is that the fact your vase does not have a backmark does not mean it is fake. It is a genuine handpainted vase.
The fact it does not have a backmark is ok and simply means it is not trying to mislead. Your vase is a genuine handcrafted item, nonetheless you can possibly see by the decoration and the art and the detail and skill is not quite up to the standard beyond a shopping market vase. If you had the experience you would know instantly that the Vase is not an antique. So you have a genuine vase. However it is not Japanese and it is not Satsuma and it is not antique. It is simply a modern vase for decoration and has little value even as a vintage. However some people like these types of vases, as your vase is a style of vase called Royal Chinese Satsuma. Made in post 1980 china, it is not real satsuma despite the name. Whatever the intention of the makers in China it seems it was an obvious attempt to cash in on the interest in Japanese Satsuma back in the day when Japansese art was valued at its highest.
Welcome Angela, I am afraid I agree with all that has been said. You were correct to be suspicious. That small indentation that you see is generally a sign of later 20thc Chinese manufacture. You can see a similar one below which I have borrowed from the Gotheborg site from a piece that was made in China then decorated in Macao.
Sharon, thank you for the confidence, I have learnt a lot from my time here thanks to my fellow members sharing their expertise. 😊
