I have been following with interest several threads this past week regarding the dating of Chinese porcelain by using the face designs on the object.  This topic has been unknown to me mainly because  I have concentrated on monochrome porcelains.  I only have two pieces in my collection that have people incorporated into the design; a soft paste vase and a basin & water bottle set.  I bought the export wash set for an early 19th century wash stand designed specifically hold this type of Chinese object. Â
I am very curious to know what information might be gained from your book regarding the attached photos of the faces on my items. Â The center panel of the basin is a bit worn since the water bottle typically sits in the basin.
I won't comment on the faces but I will be interested to hear about the second object.
As for the first, if it is not too much trouble, I would love to see a photo of the whole thing, please. 😊Â

the famille rose wash basin and bottle are from the mid 18th century. I’m sure they look beautiful in a stand. The eyes of the faces were sometimes worn away because of bad enamel quality. The bottle was made by a different painter but is from the same time. Compare the lady with one from the book below.Â
The blue and white vase is more difficult. It could be Kangxi revival but one would have to see the whole of it and the bottom and I’m not really good at that. Maybe someone else can help you better.Â

Here it is.
The wash stand came first and I later bought the basin set from a dealer in Boston named Polly Latham who specialized in export ware.  She found the set in a regional auction in rural England.  It’s funny that now the Chinese basin set is three or four times more expensive than the Pennsylvania federal wash stand.

Thanks for consulting your reference book! Â As you can see from the attached photo of the set, they share the same painted scenes, including the smaller fan & leaf shaped panels. Â I assume these wares were decorated on some type of assembly line of specialized decorative painters. Â One for underglaze blue & others for the panel scenes.

Birgit is, of course, right.
I would like to say that your basin and matched bottle are clearly Qianlong regardless the faces.
The whole decoration is telling us its date of manufacture.
My meaning in saying this is that, although the book related to faces is an excellent tool, it is not a face alone that must be considered in dating an object, but the whole decoration.

In total agreement with you. Â I had known since I bought the piece that it was absolutely Qianlong due to the potting, the paste, and the mid 18th century decorations. Â I had just never come across concept of using faces to date a piece of Chinese porcelain. Â Learn something new every day.

Quite a coincidence but I was on Polly Latham's site just after I asked you to please show the whole item. She has some very nice pieces, but I was browsing not buying - although she was selling a book which I managed to find closer to home.
Back to your pieces, I find qianlong faces generally quite distinctive, but the blue and white one is harder. I also would have to look at the whole thing.Â
