Story of a hunter so a nationally featured estate sale was today and I had to sleep in my car all night. They were not releasing the sale address until 4am but I knew the city. The house had artifacts of many different cultures but it was the Chinese art I was after. I almost didn’t go because they said the high end stuff was to be on a bid system and if the bids did not make reserve it was to go to major. Most of the items were documented from antique dealers in Hong Kong. This was a rich estate. To my surprise one guy beat me to the front door. So I was number two. Behind me was 50 plus and my major competitors were 3 and 4. So it’s a large home 3 levels where do you go left or right. I assumed the good stuff would be in the main living room. I don’t was wrong it was all copies and some averages 19th century items but good Antique furniture. So I’m in this large house my competitors are grabbing everything but I didn’t see any of that holy cow stuff anywhere so I asked the first worker and she said it’s upstairs in a private study being guarded. So I run to the stairs and a guard worker says not so fast buddy on 5 people at a time upstairs. Crap I have to wait in line. But I was next before I knew it there were 25 people in that same line. It was obvious the good stuff was in the private study on the second floor. So the next person came down my turn up the stairs. And there it was the holy cow room. The bronze was marked at $30000 lol the bowl at $6000 Tang figure $2000 it was to rich for me. That’s how things go the two things I was after were way to expensive so I switched focus next room Navajo rugs dozens of they and they were pretty cheap snag those. I grabbed a few other pieces in my run back to the study I look at the window and there is a nock and I see a vase pulled it out and yes it’s not marked took it to the lady and told her this was not marked. See tells me ok I’ll give it to you for $75 bucks. SOLD. And that was my adventure. I didn’t win the holy cow stuff but I at least didn’t come out empty handed. Or did I?
Sorry for grammar was up all night no sleep.
Its a shame about the Chinese stuff, but I bet you got first dibs on those rugs since everyone was so distracted, I'd love to see some pics, I know you know your rugs.... Eh you probably got a better buy than anyone else.
Cheers,
Jeremy
@jbeer2121 I believe I pulled a mark and period Qianlong vase out of that estate but I’m not 100 percent convinced yet. If not Qianlong it’s a revival piece. I found very strong indicators from Christie’s as being 18th century but you know these things are tricky.
And one of the Navajo rugs a Granada red Klagatoh
A very nice vase, could be late 19th century. A steal for the price, congratulations.
Birgit
@shinigami thank you I’m ok with it as long as it’s not yesterday. Lol it’s hard to make a profit on yesterday made stuff.
That's a beauty Brian, and the rug. Id say that the mark might be acceptable for a minyao piece, as is the foot, similar to some of the 18th/19th listed ones I saw while researching the Hu-form vases. I will send you an email with a useful link on Gotheborg, I think your still on there?
Also If I can find it, there was a great reference site I had found, in Chinese though, of archaistic monochromes, I'll send that tomorrow.
Jeremy
@jbeer2121 that is where I’m focusing definitely Minyao wares 18th 19th century but as we know they made some pretty impressive republic monochromes I still remember the Freemans archaic monochrome listed as Qianlong due to the expert potting skills and ended up being republic if I remember.
The rug is beautiful.
The monochrome vase is difficult to determine by pictures. I personally believe it's highly probable to be Republic period.
Mark
I sent the vase off to my contact as soon as I hear back I will let you guys know. I believe it’s a win no matter the actual dating but earlier mean more money. I believe I picked up some early wood carvings what do you think about these? Should I sell as sets or individually? The hangers were put on by a professional framing company.
