Everyone makes a mistake and makes a bad purchase. Post you're bad decisions here and why and what made you buy it. Would be nice to see and learn from others mistakes.

Heres my FAKE that I bought. At least I think it is. I thought the piece looked good. I was ignoring the paintings and gold gilt because I assumed they were added later to spice the piece up. After receiving it, some of the things I spotted and was pointed out. 1. The Horses head was looking the wrong directing. It was pointed out that most are looking the opposite direction. 2. The paintings and gilding. That I knew. 3. The shape of the horses curved legs in front. They should be out stretched.  Iffy was the dirt. I know its used to cover repairs of which there were quite a few and also added to make the piece look old.

Some of the things that looked and felt good. The inside belly clay was soft with no sharp points showing the horse was low fired. It felt right and the texture was good. Water test. When sprayed the water was instantly absorbed and the oder of ancient soil was noticed. Proportions looked good. And last, it was purchased from a trusted dealer.

Agree with you, it is a clear fake. The trusted dealer must not be very trusted.

@clayandbrush Not anymore. I never had an issue or doubt before. He also had a 100% return policy with no time limit. Until I wanted to return this piece. Nope.

@33kills

Below is a photograph of my fake Qi Baishi painting which is 130cm tall on a scroll mounting 177cm tall. Genuine paintings of this size with his detailed insects sell for hundreds of thousands pounds.

I purchased it on eBay some time ago, the seller didn't list it as a Qi Baishi painting and I did not pay a lot for it, but it is more convincing than a number of scroll paintings that have been offered by auction houses, some with 'provenance'. I bought it for its decorative value and I have it hung in our dinning room, fortunately we have tall ceilings. My genuine Qi Baishi painting is shut away for most of the time and sometimes I hang it so that I can admire it for an hour or so, but my fake is the one that is on show all of the time.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

@Jeremy,

It must be fantastic to own a genuine Qi Baishi paint work. Maybe get a full scale true copy made and put it up on the wall.

Would love to view it if your willing to share it with us. I fully understand if you do not.

Hello Mark

Although I have shared some of my paintings, I want to keep this special one to myself for the time being.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

@imperialfinegems

Hello Mark

Actually to be honest there are images of my painting already online, but I would prefer not to point them out the moment. Perhaps I may sometime in the future.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

Hi Everyone,

I've shared this before, but my biggest mistake of a fake is an obvious one and shows just how ignorant I was a few years ago when I found it in a second hand store for $90.

Not long ago I was reading an article on how to avoid fakes in collecting Chinese porcelains and it said: "Never buy anything with an American eagle on it." Too true!

Someday when I have a bigger house I will affix a finial on the top hole (yes, they drilled it for a lamp) and use it as a cookie jar. Until then it serves as a reminder and a repository for take-out menus.

Cheers,

Steve

My Jonroth Studio little plate is probably a fake, or at least an appraiser thought it might be because it had an unevenly cut applied sticker under the glaze mark. I have since seen this same plate on other forums identified as Jonroth Studios, so maybe they faked a lot of them at the same time. I also purchased two fake R S Prussia plates before I found out about the necessary little red period after the word Prussia for genuine R S Prussia, later purchased some pieces with the necessary little period. I have over paid for things before but they were not necessarily fakes, just over priced in Antique shops. For instance, the little Spider lily Japanese vase, I paid 60.00 for that, but it looked mid-century and I liked it, but I doubt it is worth 60.00 or ever was or ever will be. Sharon
