I was doing some research on a Japanese bronze mark (signature) and I came across a link from the Smithsonian Museum Library.  It seems they have a very extensive collection of reference books that you can flip through page by page online.

I've not yet searched to see what other books they have avallable, but this book on Japanese pottery marks from 1882 seems very easy to comprehend, and quite detailed.

Of course, this will only be of use for Japanese pottery prior to 1882, but that's quite a wide span.

I hope this is of some use for all of you...I feel enlightened, and a bit humble by the fact that this resource has been around for some time without my knowledge.

I wonder how many of these got mistaken for Chinese work over the last 20 years....this looks like a cool book.

Thanks for sharing.

@rahawkins my thoughts exactly regarding the faux Chinese marks…. I wish they provided illustrations of the entire piece rather than just a description. But, I bet it’s possible to cross reference the description with other online photos…. The book seems to reference famous museum collections.

@greeno107

Did I miss the date for this book?   I couldn't find it.

Also he refers to pottery only and page 3 (I think) he used the word "Keramic"  so I guess he is addressing porcelain as well.

In a quick run through I found something strange.   On Page 13 he refuses a fuku symbol in a round circle.  I have only seen this round fuku one one time - as opposed to the common square fuku.  Have any of you seen a round fuku?   --  My example here is on a very large B&W bowl.

@musicnus The date is referenced in the first page that opens when you click the link, in a caption just above the image of the book.

I have never seen a round fuku mark, and based upon my quick reference of this book, the majority of marks were quite new to me.

As often the case, information from old text are often found to be incorrect, but I admit I lack the knowledge to question the legitimacy of any of the information in this book.

Thanks, I agree.  I have been looking for another round fuku except mine.  So far this book is the ONLY one.  But, at least it is one.  13" wide x 41/2' High.

I like your bowl very much, David.  I haven't seen a round one before and I am a bit embarrassed to say that though I refer to this book often, I missed seeing it in there, too.  Thanks for showing it, good to know they exist.

@daniel007

I went back to the book shelf and found some other older books- but I liked the ones from the British Museum best,   A search with Arita, Hirado and imari yielded some useful books.  But, I was interested in a certain design with a "mon".

Finally, I went to Google and found more than I wanted to know including who could use them, what prefecture, and those with the most usage, including Shinto or Buddha, or military etc.

I found the mon I was looking for- which was the Mitsu Tomoe (three left facing commas)- the symbol used in my bowl.

Thanks - David

@musicnus

David,

Starting on page 39 of this bulletin there are marks on Arita pieces from the Shibata collection, #279 is a round fuku mark, though I think yours may date later than these as I think these are all mid 17th century.  Beautiful bowl by the way.

Super helpful list here though.

Jeremy

Thanks again. You are a wizard at finding things!!  There is a difference in the writing - But I have noticed that most of the fuku square or  (now) round markings are much like a signature. Mine is in a double circle.

However, it makes a lot of sense.  I bought this bowl in 1975 in Kyusu while traveling in Saga Prefecture to see the cities of Imari, Hirado and Arita.   We were staying in a Ryokan and when leaving I saw this large Bowl on a tansu on the way out the door.  So I asked If they would sell it to me.  I paid $23 worth of yen.  Some things we do not forget, like this happenstance.  I keep it on a large Sendai Tansu in our music room.
