As always… I was poking around some local antique shops… not finding much, but then eyed this wonderful black lacquer cabinet with carved mynah birds and prunus. Closer inspection, the middle door revolves and out pops a liquor bar. The maker label read ‘Thanh Le - Vietnam’
A bit of back and forth with my wife over the $600 price tag, and I bought it!
I’ve been in love with the rendering of the birds from first sight, but it turns out these Art Deco 1950’s cabinets by Thanh Le Studio actually bring really good money at Sotheby’s!
Here’s one they sold for $10,000 USD! I had no idea until yesterday that these were valuable.
Mine is certainly much larger, and the cool swivel bar and beautiful mynah bird rendering - Oh baby!
What a delightful looking mini bar cabinet you have bought. Congratulations!
I have heard of this iconic maker before. But didn't realize that they were in such demand. You got it for next to nothing.
Are you going to use it?
Mark
@imperialfinegems It’s a keeper!
I found some amazing results for Vietnamese lacquer screens from the 1920-50’s, one even brought over a million USD!
It’s beautiful, and I never knew such interest existed.
I don’t think my cabinet will ever achieve such high results, but it seems likely it will increase in value as Vietnamese artwork is increasing in demand exponentially every year.
I wonder if I’ve now missed out on other works due to my ignorance… se la vi!
@greeno107 How do you know it's from that maker- is there a label? If so, could you show a picture of it for reference so I know what to look for out there! Thanks! John
@johnshoe So, my cabinet has a label.
On some of these art databases, I’ve seen as many as 52 examples that have gone through auction.
The best examples, I think around 12 pieces, all have sold through Sotheby’s in China.
Ebay has 2 screen identified as Thanh Le, but they only show one photo, no indication of a signature or label, and the quality looks inferior… perhaps a later copy
The seller included some background on how they acquired the cabinet. Apparently their mother was a registered nurse and back in the 1950’s while traveling in Vietnam, she saved the life of a child - the parents gifted her the cabinet to show their appreciation.
Sadly I have no names to go with this otherwise heart warming story.
Hi Greeno -
I know nothing about such wares, but what a beautiful piece ...
Concur with Mark’s comment, very little outlay for such a quality object ...
My congratulations on acquiring ...

@ming1449 Thank you!
As the world in general seems to be moving away from the practice of collecting ‘antiques’, I find myself on occasion wondering… what does the future hold for art in the 21st c.?
Well, every indication points to the Asian market, and while Vietnamese paintings by famous artists already bring millions USD, the combination of artistic form and stylish functionality of this type of lacquer furniture has opened my eyes.
I have seen the light, and the future of Vietnamese Art Deco furniture looks very promising!
Now the trick is to find a few more pieces….
@greeno107 It's good to know because I typically look past these black lacquer pieces pretty quickly. I will take a closer from now on.
@johnshoe Same here. John, just be sure the piece is actually lacquer, not paint. I suspect most of the pieces you and I see all over the place are these 1970's 'oriental' style Baker/Drexel type pieces... which aren't worth the wood they're made from.
My photos are out of focus and I took them before cleaning the cabinet. The black lacquer is extremely glossy, like a thin layer of black lucite, except in areas of wear (near the hinges/the inner edge where the doors swing in/out). In those areas you can see the thinning of the lacquer, it is more translucent brown.
Good luck! I'm already on the hunt!
@greeno107 Let us know how you do approaching the major's with it as well, if that's the angle you plan to work.
@johnshoe Let's say I were to get $10,000 for it at Sotheby's, shipping to China would be too big a chunk out of profit for me at the moment.
I think the future looks bright, and I really like the look of this piece, so it's a keeper for now.
Have you seen what designer mid 20th c. furniture goes for with the right artist? Just check out this table made in 1980 by Diego Giacometti....FOUR MILLION EUROS!!!!

Let's allow this piece to simmer a while...its day will come!
It's beautiful. If I brought one of these into my house, it would never leave. If you're thinking in terms of market, though, I would guess that domestically, there's a growing market in the Vietnamese-American community. I suspect that they may be partly responsible for the relatively strong market for bleu de Hue.
