Yesterday we went on a day hike. In the middle of nowhere we came to a private flea market where I found an old German plaster statue. Maybe late 19th century, lots of nicks but no larger damages. 15" high. Probably queen Luise of Prussia, though I haven't found similar examples in the web. I thought it would be fun to repaint the piece and paid 5 EUR for it. My husband put it in his backpack and dropped it. Some chunks broke out of the bottom. I have reglued the larger ones but there are still gaps and small nicks.
Has anyone of you ever repaired a plaster statue? What do I use to fill the gaps? Do I have to seal the plaster before to avoid dissolving it with fresh wet plaster? Or would Milliput be an option? What colors for repainting? The web is full of advertises from restorers but I found litle information how to do it myself. I don't want to have it done by an expert since it's only a decorative piece of little value.
Birgit
I would use what we call here in the USA, ‘drywall patch’.
It’s essentially a premixed viscous plaster with binding agents, so it sticks.
Start with a small amount (might not be enough to fill a large gap at first), let it dry, then repeat.
Once filled, sand it to the correct shape.
Paint.
All done!
Thanks a lot! I found a similar product here and will try it.

Hey all,
On the topic of "off-topic", any thoughts on these plates (I have two of them)? I inherited them when my Mon died and no one else wanted them. The odd thing is that they appear to be soft-paste porcelain (snow-white, but porous enough to stain, and not translucent), and appear to have a date of 1712 on the back. That is consistent with them being pretty darn early European soft paste porcelain, which appears to first be made just after 1700. Maybe French or German? The design is stenciled on, but apparently stenciling has been used since the 1500s, so that does not disqualify them from being early.
There is an impressed mark on the back, which I think might be a kiln stilt mark--looks like they were fired, and then glazed and fired again?
Or is this all baloney, and the mark on the back is not a date, and they are mid-19th century?
Any thoughts, from you European collectors?
(If anyone complains, I shall claim that I thought they were Chinese Imari, with underglaze blue, overglaze red, and gilding... 😉)
Thanks,
Charles
@kirby13 Gaudy Welsh, 1712 is probably a pattern number. They used Imari colors, looks a nice cake plate.

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
