As you may remember, I decided to take the cloisonne that turned out to not be from Japan but Indian and another brass piece that was inlaid with abalone/Paua shell along the rim to the consignment store. They both sold very fast, apparently brass is popular, I used some of my profit to buy this Eastlake style Victorian ladies' parlor chair, which means it is short. It had already been reupholstered in the pink. It will eventually go upstairs to a bedroom. I shampooed the upholstery this morning and touched up the scratches on the wood. It will go well with other Eastlake pieces. Old English plates that seemed compatible to me with a Japanese influence to perhaps be from the Aesthetic period. The bachelor button/cornflower one in front is from my research from an old London ceramic shop, The Goode Company. The backstamp on the other one in brown looks Aesthetic movement to me. The 1901 commemorative edition of Queen Victoria with her photo, was a fine addition to the top of my Eastlake parlor table, until I started worrying about the sun fading the photo of her on top, so I placed it in an acid free mylar cover and placed on my bookshelf, I purchased it in the nineteen seventies. It has beautiful William Morris style endpapers. The large warrior jar with the bronze lid is a modern piece, which I purchased in 2020 during the pandemic, all done on-line for local pickup and the local Habit for Humanity Restore, just told me to drive up and call and they would bring it out to my car and to place blankets in the trunk and they would wrap it for me. It usually lives on top of the weathered wood stand that my husband made for me to go with the driftwood painting of the blue heron, which was a gift. We were all masked up and I did not have to leave the driver's seat of my car. In any case, my cloisonne piece that featured spider lilies still paid off for me in a roundabout way. If you know anything about how old these English plates would be and whether or not they fit into the Japanese influenced Aesthetic Period, I would appreciate hearing from you.
Best, Sharon
What a nice chair and I like that shade of blue on your walls.
As for the plates, Thomas Goode was a shop in London, they ordered porcelain from various manufacturers. You may be able to access more info about the plate and who made it either from sites like replacements.com or thepotteries.org .
I can't see the other mark clearly but that maker may also be on the sites.
I really can't see the front of the plates.
Not really my area but from what I remember the mark England is prior to 1904. Whereas after its 'made in England '.
I like the chair.
Mark
Thank you Mark and Julia, there is a Wikipedia page on T. Goode now, showing what the front of the shop looked like in Mayfair, it closed in 2024 and opened in 1845. In the nineteen-seventies we ordered some replacement pieces for antique furniture from Horton Brasses and they were also selling a reprint edition of Hints on Household Taste, by Charles Eastlake, who was very involved in design with William Morris and since I had some Eastlake style I ordered the book. The paint color in my breakfast room and kitchen is called City Rain, I love it. The True Taupe Color never worked very well and I knew it was a mistake as soon as the contractor put it on the walls, but by that time, I just wanted them out of my house. My husband asked me one day if I had any jobs he could do and I said, "yes, paint my kitchen." Here is a better photo of the plate fronts and of the marks and the cover of the book and endpapers. I think the plates may be more Arte Nouveau, with the swirly lines, but that brown on the front of the one plate made me think Aesthetic, but since Arte Nouveau was also influenced by Japan, I suppose does not matter. The swirly ribbon design on the set of 6 egg cups I purchased in the seventies as a gift to my late Mother-in-law also looked Arte Nouveau to me, they were unmarked, but they are porcelain and I think more likely German than anything else. Here is a better photo of my book and the endpapers, it was a happy book scouting day in the seventies when I found it in a bookshop and it was only 5 dollars. I fell in love with the endpapers.
