Hello everyone!
I'm interested in your thoughts on this Bronze Mirror.
It's from an UK estate with proofable provenance and was offered as Qing Dynasty 🤭by the seller. (don't know why🤷)
Got it for a bargain price and no auction house I offered it to accepted it so far...
How come? The piece seems legit to me...
Thanks for every thought and opinion!
with Best Regards...
Carsten
Hi,
I don't know if it is genuine, but if all the majors turned you down, surely it can only be for certain reasons eg it is a fake; they think the provenance is faked; the sale price is not high enough for them; or they don't like dealing with people they don't know.
If none of those is the case then I don't know what to say. Did they give reasons? Did you ask any of them to value it first?
If no one here can help, maybe send photos to Peter for an appraisal?
Julia
Hi Detuned,
A little confused you say the mirror has provable provenance but the seller offered it as Qing Dynasty and you don't know why. Was the provable provenance a different period ? What form was this provenance in ?
From the photos which are nice clear photos for a change the mirror seems to have been cleaned and polished recently and the back has what looks like signs of having been silver plated perhaps that's why there has been no interest from the places you have tried to arrange a sale.
Michael
@julia I offered a whole slate of objects (Ancient Greek, Pre-Columbian and Chinese). So usually I just get a thanks... but no thanks! (Many times already). I'll post some of the vases here later 😉
Bonhams just told me it's all modern, which made me laugh really hard...
@Brettm I meant it has been owned by the family in the UK since the 1920's. I have documents confirming that... It was dated not by that family, but by the vendor they commissioned it to.
If it is silver plated the value is the thing raising reluctance. I agree with you. But since I don't handle something like this often, it is nice to get an explenation. Because as I wrote to Julia above, with so many objects you just get a "naw... thank you"
with Best Regards...
Carsten
Try sending singly to someone in the area of expertise and ask for thir opinion? Where did you buy it?
Julia
@julia got it from an auction house in Dorking UK.
I'll probably let some look at it again with more knowledge of the matter at hand, then me 🤭
Thank you!
with Best Regards...
Carsten
This mirror would date to the Tang dynasty but I also think it's a fake.
@avatar could you roll out that explenation, on why you think it is a fake? Style? Crafting?
Thank you!
with Best Regards...
Carsten
No, it's just a feeling I have. I see a lot of Chinese mirrors that look really convincing but most of them are fakes. Yours doesn't look convincing to my eye but maybe I'm wrong.
@avatar Ok thanks 😉
I totaly get that subjective feeling, as it is with many antiques initially! My expertise in the field of bronze mirrors needs more development to support my gut feelings 🤭
with Best Regards...
Carsten
Here's an earlier (Zhou-Han) likely authentic mirror I'm looking at. It's from a source that has had really interesting archaic and likely authentic bronze available in the past but very clever and convincing fakes that can fool experienced and honest dealers are being made so I know I have to be very careful.
@avatar Love it... 👍 Very clear and fine casting. Also the patination convinces me...
with Best Regards...
Carsten
