Went to a small antique shop yesterday and bought this c. 1911 Noritake Morimura Brothers 7.5" handled plate. The gold beads are intact but it has lost some gold design between the raised gold designs on the rim. The outermost design on the rim is a pale yellow. You can usually count on finding some Noritake and it was not expensive, only seven dollars and I also found a small pink and copper lustre pitcher for only six dollars, a fine time. Sharon
Always fun hunting at antique shops. What a cute little plate, would love to see the pink and copper lustre pitcher too!
@bartholin Will do, I was reading about Kate Chase of civil war fame this a.m., which led to her half sister Nettie Chase Hoyt, so I watched a video from the Southampton History Museum about Nettie (Jeannette Chase), so of course some other offering of videos from them magically appeared on my YouTube page and noticed it was as about Jessie Woolworth Donahue, is that the lady who owned your Newton plate? If so, you may want to watch the video. 😀
@barholin I looked at your post again, so no, not Jessie, but her sister Helena or her niece Helena.
@sharonp Sorry! I just saw, but it looks like Jessie was the granddaughter of the person who owned my plate. I still need to look into Helena more, but she really had a huge collection of Chinese export porcelain. I wonder if you saw any pieces hiding in the background for Jessie's video? I always like spotting porcelain in the background. She probably had some handed down on her side. This was one of her porcelain rooms that was recreated in the Boston MFA and the MET:
@bartholin Unfortunately no interiors, just exterior shots of some great properties. The series of talks mirrors The Gilded Age in some ways, about the Old and New People, apparently Jessie had some problems crashing the old set in Southhampton and turned South to Palm Beach, Florida, which is all hilarious when you remember the Astor family descended from a German butcher and the Vanderbilts from a Dutch indentured servant, which is as America was and always should be.
@bartholin Looks like she had some Fitzhugh on the top shelf on the left of the photo, I feel sorry for the servants who had to dust those open shelves, probably a two person job to hand the porcelain down to the one standing on the floor, bet they both breathed a sigh of relief when the job was done without mishap, makes me nervous to think about it.
John, the 2.5" pink and copper lustre appears to be older than the blue and copper 3.5" one that I've had for several years because it does not have the word England on the bottom, in fact, I'm not sure if the mark on the pink one begins with and M or a W.
Tea leaf lustre had a shining moment in the seventies, not so much anymore, not sure which is older? The Alfred Meakin is butter pat size. I like the smalls. My only other lustre pieces are a saucer to the cup already posted with the London style handle and a Tea Leaf lustre plate that is stained, which I would soak it in the hydrogen peroxide method, except I do not think Tea Leaf Lustre is worth the cost of the peroxide any longer, does not seem very popular. Sharon
I always worry when I dust my shelves, I can't imagine having to navigate around a room like that, especially with the pistol-handled urns at the top! It's frightening, but at least everything is spaced out. I just checked, it looks like Helena donated 456 pieces to the MET, but I didn't see those fitzhugh plates. I wonder if those made their way down to Jessie or another relative.
Also, your little creamer jug is cute! I can see why you picked it up. I really like the blue flower splashes on it. The mark is so difficult to read though, I couldn't find anything on it. I'm going to keep an eye out, but I agree - it looks to have more age than the blue one, and most of the other comps for the Allerton Longton England mark date it to 1890-1912.
Love love LOVE!! Noritake especially the M in a wreath marked pieces! Don't know why a line is going through my text.. 😆
Noritake was a prolific porcelain producer. Sometimes I think the lack of scarcity weighs the prices down. Some are pretty nice.
@rahawkins Yes, it was a fan favorite with U.S. brides for generations and as wedding gifts, I think every bride from my generation received at least one white clam shell design side nut/sweet dish. I use the saucers for coasters because you can count on coming across more Noritake at thrift and charity shops. I find the ones from the thirties and forties particularly attractive.
