Im looking for your thoughts on Guri vase time line on eBay. The reason I’m looking I’m studying a pare like this one but older this is the only one I found in the same shape before this one came up on eBay. You’re input will be very helpful John
I’ve bought two pieces that have come from the Hartman collection, and once spoke toMr. Hartman (NY) - he was quite friendly and helpful with referencing a catalog number one of the items I bought.
However, both items turned out to be 20th c. copies.
This is not to say all if his pieces are or were, as many went into major auctions. However, as we all are human, there were mistakes made in cataloging his collection.
So, judge this guru vase by the visual facts, not the provenance… this is my first but of advice.
Seems the vase is coming from West Palm Beach…perhaps coincidence, but that’s where I bought my Hartman pieces.
Judging the listing, there is no claim of age, no mention the mark is Qianlong, however they seem to know about the term guru lacquer. Strange?
Finally, the vase seems to lack the rounded edges that should be expected of guru. The true test is to view the number of layers of lacquer that were applied….each color level should be composed of 10-20 layers in my experience. Newer copies have only 5-10.

Hope your all well, I posted these because I found two similar to one on eBay. I should have known when he said made out of copper when it was made . Mine not made out of copper they mixes metals they hand made the bottom and top made separately then sides are cut and pieces are put to getter I have pictures of the inside I don’t know if you can tell how they are put together, I’m not seeing in welding marks or soldering. You’re thoughts are always welcome. John
They came from Saipan they have a lot age marks.

@john-steward late 19th c. to early 20th c. These type of cinnabar vases are not in high demand with collectors.

I don’t know if in late 19th century they went to that much trouble to hand make all the pieces when they could do it like the one on eBay one piece copper put Qing long mark. From what I’ve tested so for there iron tin, copper in the metal frame works, I’m going to get a stronger microscope to see if I can count the layers. It maybe late 19th century pieces but all the the ones I have found don’t have the age related ware. I found this one on Sotheby’s that’s has the same style of carvings but not the ware and made out of metal thanks for your input John
