What are your thoughts on naming an untitled work? Im about to have some stuff professionally framed, but none of the artwork (purchased by me) is titled. One of the options the framer offers is to add text to the frame.
Is this something done by collectors to help identify the works they buy?
I was thinking about putting the artist's name down, but might give short titles to the works as well.
I would use a short description as a title. There's nothing wrong with this for purposes of cataloguing your art.

I would start using some nice labels of your choice and include a description and date acquired and paste the label on backside of the framed work

Thanks. They said they could add a pouch to the back of the frame, so I can include a receipt copy.

Definitely on the back, I have some old paintings, one with the place in Wales where it was painted on label on the back and a painting from 1936 of a California landscape that might have a location on the canvas except the brown paper covering the back of the frame is still in great shape, as is the frame, so l'll leave that for someone else to discover. I always placed the title if there was one on the back of my paintings, my college professor said she wished I had titled her paintings, another one told me he always left his untitled. I usually signed mine on the back, as I thought the name on the front was rather jarring, but lately I started signing on a front corner, signed in a way that no one who did not know me, would know that I was female. As someone regularly hunting provenance on old paintings, only provide info which you have either confirmed via earlier provenance or a quick description for your records. It really never seems to matter in the short term, but just picture in three hundred years some researcher cursing your name after spending a month( or longer) tracking down a title only to find nothing on it at the bottom of the rabbit hole. I know that's dramatic for most things, but you just never know what someone in the future will decide is worth the pursuit, and it is good practice to apply to all art. Think of it like adding data to a museum database....
all excellent advice here, especially placing this all in a little Mylar envelope at the back and cramming it full of said data... wish they did that a few hundred years ago.

@rahawkins @jbeer2121 Very true and if unsure of, use "in the school of" or "after" if no hard evidence it was painted in the artist's hand.

Just as an example, currently i am a year plus into the research of a tempera on paper with later oil additions, probably first half of the 16th century, copy of the Scuola Nuovo tapestry, left hand panel of Massacre of the Innocents, by Raffael, Giulio Romano, and company. I am fairly certain it dates to the orign era for these works, or close to it.
There are hundreds of paintings over the years labeled as originating from Raffael, though he was dead before these were even laid on paper. in total there is one intact sketch on paper that relates to this with good provenance, but chasing ever single "stated to be by X artist" copy is tiring. And despite being sure of my own work on it, I could never state it to be true unless backed up by the data. I will probably spend many more years on this due to the great quantity of data that is not actually data...
School of, circle of, studio of, and then in the manner of etc.... is very important in my opinion.
