I’m very excited to have purchased my first 5 claw blue dragon. It’s not only extremely hard to win one in auction but very expensive. So my first dragon is damaged and it will need a little TLC but I got it for under 80 bucks and it’s my first I’m pretty excited to finally have a blue dragon. I don’t have any issues buying broken pieces as the art is my main focus. And a very experienced collector once told me Brian if it wasn’t broken you probably wouldn’t own it.
Thanks for sharing your new find. I'm with you about not minding if a piece has a break as long as it is a good piece.
I don't mind damage either, especially if it means I get something old and lovely for a good price.
Is it the neck that has the damage? I often see that on these pieces, in fact, I have one. I wonder if it happens because they have been shipped at some point with their lid in place, instead of packed separately, and the constant knocking causes issues.
@julia many years ago I bought a very beautiful Satsuma vase it was very high quality. The seller shipped it in news paper it was destroyed very annoying I must admit.

@imperialfinegems I think it’s late Guangxu and it was sold as such. What’s you thoughts?
Difficult with one image. But it's either Guangxu period or Republican period. The dots depicted as scales were very popular during both the Republic period and Guangxu period. As you know!

Your absolutely correct Brian. If it was perfect it would have been expensive. Chinese buyers atm do not tend to buy damaged. That will change I believe as the market changes. The price you paid was a bargain!
The Yabu Meizan cup I bought recently that I posted with the Japanese Kannon also has a small repair. But the price was very reasonable. A perfect one similar but a common design sold for good money at Bonhams.

@imperialfinegems Mark Imperial dragons are so hard to fight for right now I have been in bidding wars on several sites and it’s always a shoot out. Even Guangxu and Republic blue dragons are fought over. My problem is I don’t want to pay a $1000 for one so my price range is the range that brings the most competition. I bought this from reputable source no one was interested due to the damage which I could care less about.

Going back to your vase/other. I think early republican period. The way the dragon is depicted I think is very republican imo.
But others may have a differing opinion. Whether it is late guangxu or early republic does not really matter I submit.

@imperialfinegems thanks Mark if you want to see amazing high end fakes that FB page is a reality check but I also have seen plenty of authentic pieces people bought and had no ideal like me. It’s worth looking into a picture of the fake market.
I have a repaired Kangxi charger that hangs over my stove so I agree about buying previously broken items. Congratulations on this find - it's lovely!
