Hi,
I was wondering. Why the Chinese create so much fake stuff these days? Some of them look pretty close. So if they can actually create high quality fakes, why not make high quality real pieces? Are there any you know off?
With a modern 21st century seal mark or something. I think people would pay for this if the quality is outstanding. Or is this even in China not possible anymore to make a profit this way?
It makes me sad they are flushing the market with fake stuff, if their ancestors knew, it would piss them off for sure 😀
I have wondered the same sort of things. If they are handmade and artfully done, why don't they just own it, give it a modern twist and mark to identify it as 21st C and it will be collectible in its own authentic way. A shame to see such talent wasted on a deception.
They do it because of the ridiculous prices being brought in auction, they only need to catch a few unwary buyers. It is really ridiculous when you think that a communist country is primarily selling high priced fakes to millionaire/billionaire citizens of a communist country, which begs an entirely different set of questions.
In a recent video Peter showed a modern item that was being auctioned with a decent estimate of maybe 5-10,000 ( can't remember exactly, but it was I think the Rob Michaels auction) range that was new and even dated as new. It was just a modern high quality piece of porcelain, not trying to deceive, just being what it is. So it was cool to see that modern quality can be done authentically and apprectiated. The design had a contemporary spin on traditional themes. It was a neat piece and Peter spoke highly of it.

There are modern Chinese artists who actually are doing exactly this - they are painting landscapes in traditional style with modern buildings or electric posts, they put industrial elements, etc.
And some of those guys' works are extremely expensive.

China's contemporary scene is becoming incredibly diverse and robustly represented these days due to market interest, and the emerging of top rising contemporary talent; both for exposure and sales results.
There's also an equal number of fakes often had for top artists in the contemporary/modern category as well - so you have to be just as careful at times!
Keep in mind Bidamount is more or less aimed at antique works of Asian Art; but you'd perhaps be surprised to learn just how vibrant and diehard the contemporary scene is in the country - and others in Asia as a whole; often well after the antique side of the decorative arts market moves on (i.e. South Korea & Japan).

I've been looking all over for these modern landscape vases, where can I find them? Even pictures.
My apologies, Kevin.
I'm being bit occupied at my daytime job.
Are you asking for some examples or items available to buy?
I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Kind regards,
Adrian

@kevin (and anybody else who may be interested),
Here would be some contemporary Chinese artists I enjoy working with ceramics who also adhere to a bit of “old meets new” aesthetic, and some works of theirs to reference:
Sin-ying Ho
(Often works in large ceramic forms with underglaze and over-applied enamels/decals).
Representative work:
World Garden No.2
Lei Xue
(Porcelain sculptures, often with enamels designed to create juxtaposition through either the ceramic design or featured depictions contrasting with such).
Representative work:
Drinking Tea
The above series (which is still in creation), focuses on ceramic bodies depicting crushed drink cans - but featuring Ming style blue and white enameled imagery.
Its quite awesome!
I can’t personally point you to a Chinese artist that I follow for modern cityscapes or such; but I’m sure there’s a fair amount out there if you look around.
(While more abstract/modern might not be for everybody’s tastes - don’t shy away from letting yourself look at some of the great current Chinese works being created in other unique styles!)
A bonus one to look at (in a similar vein) would be the Vietnamese artist Bui Cong Khanh...
Multidisciplinary artist, but definitely one with a strong ceramic catalogue of depicted works.
Very focused on social/political commentary; and (imo) extremely gifted.
His series Fortress Temple would probably be one worth looking at in-line with more contemporary elements (which are rendered on large ceramic baluster vases).
Hope these give you some viewings!
Best,
-JRN
