Hi everyone,
Somehow, I ended up browsing on this website, today, and came across this bowl. Those rings around the base, the colours and the dragon having three claws, all looks quite Japanese to me. Is it Chinese? Is it that old?
Julia
Interesting Julia
The 3 clawed dragons are for sure not seen often on Chinese wares , as for the blue rings i think i have seen this on Ming wares probably copied by the Japanese . It will be interesting to see what our seasoned Ming specialists think.
Carl
Hi Julia -
Base on the overall painting style, colours, drawing of individual strokes within different characters and the execution of the mark I think this piece is Japanese possible, as Carl mentions, inspired by/copying aspects of Chinese designs and motifs. The two exterior fruits sprays are peach and buddha's head citron, with a single peach to the central interior ...
The footrim exhibits little signs of age/wear, and the base glaze appears very 'white' but this may be the images, so I will defer to the Japanese specialists here regarding dating attribution ...
Stuart
I also believe that cup is of Japanese origin.
I base this on firstly on the silver repair inlaid into the crack. This is known in Japan as Kintsugi repair. I do not know if this is also replicated in China etc. Secondly, the colors (very bright) used appear to my eye to be that used on japanese wares. Thirdly the overall look and display exerber a Japanese theme.
The mark is imo very well done with excellent use of hand work.
Nice little find, Julie. A great discussion piece! 🤔
Mark
I just get a feel that it might be an early to mid 18th century Kakiemon piece .
Carl
You maybe right on the money there Carl. Well done!
I get the feeling that the 'shots' may not reflect the true nature of the colours. Hence the very bright colours.
Mark
Thank you all for looking. As a novice, it is so easy to feel unsure of your own opinion therefore I doubted that my belief that this is Japanese could be correct so you can imagine how pleased I am that you all agree. I must be getting somewhere!
It is actually a nice little bowl. Carl, an old piece of Kakiemon could well be correct, it certainly seems to fit and of course, Mark, the style of repair is Japanese, I had completely over-looked that! Thanks for pointing it out.
The only thing that made me think it could be Chinese (other than the decoration elements as mentioned by Carl & Stuart) was that the mark looked more as though it was made by a Chinese hand than Japanese. However, I was pretty certain that if this was really Jiajing, Stuart would know but that base really didn't look correct for that.
So, I think we are agreed that it is a later (about 200 yrs), Japanese piece. That sounds good to me. Thanks everyone!
