Attached images of a large dish, D. 35.8 cm, H. 7.5 cm, FD. 25 cm, decorated to the centre with a Qilin running/jumping over a ground line with grasses either side, below a large cloud and surrounded by smaller clouds, single cash and swastika emblems. Four detached fruiting grape vines decorate the cavetto, below a trellis dipper border encircling the interior rim. The exterior lotus scroll, with six large blossom, leaves and undulating stems, is a direct continuation of the type/style seen on Imperial Yongle/Xuande wares, but is powerful drawn with great movement and freedom. The outer-edge of the foot slants inwards, the inner edge is straight and is cut at 90 degrees to the speckled iron-brown/black unglazed base.
The piece is slightly warped, there are kiln additions to the outside foot edge and the glaze to exhibits some iron spots. especially to the centre.
This dish dates to late Xuande/early Zhengtong periods and is rather rare. The only other comparable piece so far published is a dish recovered from the Pandanan shipwreck, which is similar in size and overall composition. There are also 3/4 other pieces known with identical trellis/grape designs to the rim/cavetto, but differing central compositions.

I have been very busy lately, and actually I still am. So I have been absent from the Forum.
What an incredible piece! Let me say that, if I had found it at a flea market, I would have had doubts, because I have never seen something similar. But I am sure that, by handling it, this piece should speak from itself.

Thank you for showing this beautiful dish, Stuart. It's a great piece to learn since everything is right in it: the very lively Qilin, the kiln grit, the colors, the distribution of the patterns over the surface. Even the unglazed bottom that I usually shun looks as it should. There's that easy, seemingly effortless painting style that comes from years of practice - something that is hardly achieved by fakers. A certain stiffness is what reveals most fakes.

Wow, Impressive dish. I recall someone saying that anything over 30cm can be considered a charger. Perhaps as it is more a bowl that may not apply but still quite a size to it.
