Update: the jarlets arrived, safe and sound. They are lovely and much smaller than I realized, which makes them even cuter. The largest one, with a crane on two sides, seems to have had its neck cut down; I don't know when that happened or why. Maybe because of a firing flaw?
I am getting cold feet about selling: I live in CA and you have to register as an online seller and (I think) file taxes quarterly. I have researched spreadsheets and am fine with record keeping, but the amount of tax work needed seems intimidating.
@steve That's interesting. I wonder if there were chips in the rim, so someone decided to just grind it down to make it even. That's a difficult decision with the tax situation. Please let us know if you decide to move forward with it! I'd love to follow your store.
@bartholin Yes, that's what I'm thinking. I suppose there's no way of knowing when that happened, is there? I love the greenish color and the pronounced crazing; I gave it a denture-cleaning bath but didn't have enough tablets so I may try again; there seems to be a film of grime that is hard to get off.
I just need to check with my full time boss (department chair) to make sure it's kosher with my univeristy for me to sell for profit on the side. I'm assuming it is. In which case I will plow on despite the cold feet.
@steve I don't think so. Nevertheless, it's a charming lot of jars. I'm sure they all have their own interesting untold stories. Although, I'm definitely partial to the Hoi An Hoard jar! I had ambitions to start my own dealer venture, and made a logo and everything, but I have somehow found an excuse to keep everything I buy for my own collection. It makes for fun collection stickers at least.
@bartholin Yes, my inventory is small; I could sit on them for a few years. There's really no hurry, I suppose.
One of the jarlets looks Japanese to me. Is that possible? It's porcelain, so if it is Japanese it would be late 17th c. or later.
"but I have somehow found an excuse to keep everything I buy for my own collection. "
--------------Totally agreed! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
Meanwhile I need to start selling because the bubble wrap, shipping peanuts, and stack of boxes keep piling up! 😜
@steve I beat if you turn these jarlets into Christmas tree ornaments they will sell themselves. Well they will sell period but I wouldn’t mind a Ming Christmas tree ornament.
I'm glad it's not just me! 🤣 Turns out it's relatively easy to make a connection to the maritime trade if I research long enough.
I also keep all of my packing materials and recycle them when I sell! I have a little corner of different packing peanuts, and it's kind of fun to see the different shapes. I think my favorite is the one Nicolas Fournery uses. They look like mini Pringles.
Might be fun to take up a pottery class and make those ornaments! There's definitely a market for them - I was looking for some last Christmas.
The jar with the sanded-down top features an egret standing before a lotus plant. I just read in my book on Chinese symbols in art this symbolizes: '...the Confucian ideal of a virtuous (uncorrupt) official. . . . It can also be interpreted as "repeated success along the way [of one's career]"' (From Chinese Art; A Guide to Motifs and Visual Imagery by Patricia Bjaaland Welch, p. 74.)
