I am interested in the results as well. Since there are many high priced lots it will be a good test, if the market is really getting stronger.
@asiarob Well, the results are in. Other than this beauty, pretty much all the high estimate pieces went unsold - quite a disappointment and another example of why high estimates are a bad idea in many cases. Too bad because now the market is not clear on what these are worth, just what they aren't worth.
I recently aquired a lovely collection. A banker with no heirs had these and a few others I'm holding on to for the moment. I listed some for sale on eBay. Here is a link for anyone interested. JT
Antique Japanese Meiji Period 19th C. Shippo Cloisonne Lidded Chest In Rare Form | eBay
Several pages back I posted about a clear top of cloisonné to learn it’s called Plique a jour. well I now own a piece of plique a jour.

it was discribed as Victorian but knew it was not, it is I believe to be 1920’ish.the starting bid was cheap and the only other interested party backed out early so I got it well under the average selling. By the way, prices for this type of bowl, only 6 inches(about 12cm) across are all over the place from low 300’s to all the way to a crazy asking price of 1200. US$. That’s Ebay for you. All the wire work is done by hand.
I think the measures regarding the Japanese art market (including cloisonné) need to be lower than a very high priced sothebys auction. At first I was a bit disappointed by those results, but after thinking it over for a while my opinion is, that it is a good sign that many of the lower priced lots were sold. The prices were relatively strong compared to results of comparable pieces at other auction houses. And a few years ago there would probably not have been even one sale on an auction like this.
At least the upside is that normal people like me can potentially acquire high quality pieces for affordable prices.
Regards
Robin
Great find, I hope it is 19th century, it looks better quality than the vintage Chinese ones that are around. At least i am led to belive they are Chinese vintage. II have always tried to get a plique a Jour. The antique ones are hard to find so well done.
@johnshoe, Robin,@short-dong, yes they are undervalued in my view as well, when you consider the work that goes into these things. As far as dating goes it would be nice if it turned out to be Victorian but I do not have the knowledge to make the determination. This is probably the second time I have handled one, the first was many decades ago. All I know of these is what I found on the net, information is minimal.

I think and this is from someone that made a very basic search a long while ago into plique a jour, but that your item, it is most likely mid 20th century vintage chinese. They still command good prices. The antique ones are so very hard to find and a french antique plique a jour, i cannot find many. I think with plique a jour ideally you want a famous maker, and the rarest of pieces that are 19th century are Russian etc and expensive and rare. I remember wanting to get a Plique a jour and could not find anything that was a genuine antique, i.e readily available.
I guess plique a jour is another on of those areas where expertise is the only way to find the right item for investment.

Yes I agree with you @short-dong.

from the later Meji period are absolutely stunning to hold. My understanding is that Ando was the first artist to attempt making such wares. They were extremely difficult to produce.
Here is one that I bought a year or so ago. It's a PLQ bowl of about 5.5" in perfect condition. From the late Meiji period. With silver mounts.
They are absolutely unreal to hold and admire. The quality is outstanding. Most unfortunately are damaged. The prices are still subdued. I bought this one from a member of the forum. I do hope to purchase a vase one day.

Shortdong, I may very well be mid century, I saw a lot that looked very similar but the dating was all over the place on the listings. I am afraid though that the authentic 1900th century ones are way over my budget for such things.

Absolutely Rohm,
They are expensive. You can still find a few late Meiji bowls on excellent condition on eBay. But the asking prices are very high. I think from memory they are asking about $3,000 usd plus. There is however one with a lid for about $600. But it was damaged/repaired. Which impacts the price substantially. Still a attractive piece.
But you can still find bargains. I do recall a member posting one that was on sold on eBay. It was a genuine Meji one on great condition for a stupid low price of about $50. I wish I had seen it! 💵😁
I couldn't believe it. So I emailed the seller to confirm.

Mark, I’m into my bowl for just under a $100 Canuck dollars, (about $70US) all in. Even as a mid century bowl I should be good I think. Chances are it will sit on the eterge for the next 20 years or so and be looked at occasionally while dusting. It blends well with all our other Victorian clutter.😏
@rohm,
They look amazing don't they in the right way setting.
