Hi all - I thought some of you might like to see this piece ...
Attached images of stem bowl - mouth diameter 16.9 cm, height 12 cm - decorated with a peony scroll with four full facing blossoms with large/small leaves upon an undulating stem, the centre with a single large chrysanthemum flower, surrounded by four half and five much smaller blossoms. The whole composition is reserved in white against a blue ground, the stem with downward pointing plantain leaves, again against a blue ground.
The piece is slightly warped, there are two hairline rim cracks, and the interior/exterior glaze exhibits several iron-spots, glaze pits and small pulls. The interior of the stem displays traces of the slip used to attached it to the bowl.
These cobalt rich white on blue design were much more labour intensive, and therefore more expensive, to produce then the normal blue and white pieces, especially so for the minyao kilns, where this stem bowl was made. Although other late 15th/early 16th C pieces - mostly bowls and dishes - are know with similar/differing motifs decorated in this style, stem bowls are exceptional rare.
This pantingly style of this piece would date it to the late 15th C, probably Hongzhi period. I acquired it around five years ago ...

That is lovely, Stuart. I like the way it has a straighter foot. I can't say I have seen that before, or if I have, it hasn't stuck in my memory.
Just beautiful! I especially like the way the blue is applied, so blotchy that you see every stroke the painter made. In a modern fake it would look much more uniform.
Birgit
Stunning example of a fine piece.
Stuart, if I may ask. What are the two labels attached?
Mark
Hi Stuart,
just lovely! Do you find these pieces in little-known bargain hot-spots (won’t ask where!) or are these acquisitions made through dealers and retailers of Chinese porcelain? I only ask because it’s interesting to know how people build a good collection.
Hope you don’t mind me asking!
Nic
Hi Mark and ND -
Mark - the two attached labels are 1:- plain stock No '29381', and 2:- personal dealers label with the stock No written in the middle ...
ND - No problem to ask ... Most of my initial acquisitions were acquired from one dealer, who I've now know for over 20 years. More recent pieces have come through other dealers who I've got to know over the years - mostly UK based but 2/3 from Hong Kong - who are either Chinese and/or Japanese specialists or general dealers, and 2 from the auction houses - although I very rarely bye from these as I don't like paying the 25% commission/taxes ...
The large, damaged late 15th century jar decorated with seven scholars enjoying the four 'pastimes' was found on a architectural reclamation/antique centre farmyard in Norfolk - which proves that wonderful pieces can still be found in rather 'unusual' places ....!!
Stuart
Thanks Stuart,
that’s really informative. One can sometimes put oneself under pressure to find that rare gem at a bargain price, but it’s good to know that it’s still possible to build a good relationship with dealers and consequently be in line to be offered good pieces.
Gratefully
Nic
Dear Stuart,
congratualtions, a superb and rare peice.
It seems that you have a Museum at home! Are you focused on Ming ware only?
Regards
Giovanni
Hi ND -
I was very fortunate when first becoming interested, and then starting to collect, that I meet the 'right' people - very good and knowledgeable dealers and then collectors - who were very generous in allowing me to handle pieces, look through their libraries, ask 'endless' questions and discuss potential acquisitions ....
Yes, building a good relationship - over time - with dealers can be very helpful, as they will contact you when they have something that might be of interest ... Luckily for me, the pieces I may have a particular interest in rarely come on the market know - and when they do are now well out of my price range - which means I don't have to spend money that often ...
Stuart
Dear Giovanni -
A few interesting pieces - most of which have some damage - so hardly a museum ...
Although my focus for many years has been on 15th C Ming wares, I have a few mid/late 16th/17th century blue and white pieces and some 18th/19th century monochromes ...
I also have two Japanese pieces, acquired only because they are also 'interesting' examples of type, but I know very little about such ...
All collectors, no matter the subject, are 'just custodians' of such objects for a short time ...
Stuart

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
The Museum’s collections of Asian art span nearly five millennia and encompass the cultures of China, the Himalayas, India, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. In 2007, the Museum launched an initiative to create dedicated galleries for the collection, beginning with a gallery for the arts of Korea ...
