Were any of you chasing this pair of Kutani vases? I was amazed by their quality and bid on them but lost. (Not that I had space for them - I just wanted them!)
They sold for $500. Not bad, I'd say!
Seems like an absurdly low price. Congratulations to whoever got them.
@johnshoe Yes. If I had more gumption I would have chased them higher (plus there's the commission and shipping and one of them is repaired). The excellence and detail are really stunning. They remind me of the example Peter showed in one of his videos on collecting.
I've attempted to translate the mark:
"Devil of Valley Mountain," or "Devil of Taniyama." Taniyama is on old name for Kamifukumoto town in Kogoshima City. There is an association with Kutani in this area. Probably 19th century.
Already excited to see it in person.
To me these vases are breathtakingly beautiful, with all of that exquisite detail. On the one hand i'm glad i didn't know about them, because doubtless I would have lost all self-discipline; on the other hand, wow, what a lost opportunity for me or for anyone else here who collects Kutani! The low prices of (good) Kutani porcelain in general and of these vases in particular, never cease to amaze! As Peter might say, and I concur: I sure hope one of you got these! Thank you Steve, for posting!

@charlotte They are amazing, aren't they? I'm eating my heart out that I wasn't willing to chase them higher.
Peter did say to keep a lookout for this kind of Kutani ware; they're uncommon but not too rare.
If you love them, they were worth it. And are yours intact and not repaired? One of those had a big repair to the top.
Auctions are strange. Seems like either you get a really good deal or bidders drive them above retail price.
Mine are both intact, yes, but I paid $1500 for one, and $1100 for the other - yikes! However, I look at them every single day with great "passion" because I find them to be so beautiful. I have never spent more than $1500 on any of my Asian Art, and likely never will again. When I talked to Peter about the more expensive one, he said "that's a high retail price," but that he probably would have done the same for that vase.
@steve my other Kutani example is pretty great. It is a pair of chargers, which I got at Doyle NY. I paid a little more (still under 1k), but they are undamaged. It is the sort of thing that they regularly feature in their Asia week sales. I recommend bookmarking them if you haven't already.

@charlotte I think you're okay. These ones went for 5K at Christie's. The right people must have been there that day.
And yes, I'll follow up with some snapshots when they arrive.
@rahawkins Wow, that seems like a bit much for those vases, doesn't it? I wonder if the mere presence of Christie's causes people to spend more than they normally would.
@charlotte Maybe. I think sometimes it has the opposite effect. When Christie's includes items like this, sometimes the buyers aren't looking for them there.
