@imperialfinegems Hi Mark, I meant to comment here. First of all, thank you for responding. Just as an FYI, I had asked the auction house, Andrew Jones, about what you said here:

“ I believe but not sure that the auction houses on both liveauctions and invaluable have access to your purchase history to see if you have been a good payer.”

and they replied that they get NO info from Live Auctioneers about payment record. I wonder if that’s true🤷‍♀️

@charlotte I think this is probably true. There are some auction houses that REALLY shouldnt have access to that information.  It would be a liability for liveauctioneers to share it.

Ive only ever gotten advertisements in the mail from auction houses at which I have personally shopped.

Thanks, Tim! Good to hear that you still appreciate good Kutani, and I think keeping a collection of your favorite 100 pieces is a good rule to live by. Have you mentioned that here before? Definitely keep me posted on your Kutani pieces.

Charlotte - thank you for sharing your wonderful collection! I feel like we have similar tastes, and I particularly love the first two vases you shared. The second vase with the foo lion finial looks so familiar too - I think I had it on my eBay watch list before. I built up my collection and library in a one-bedroom apartment as well, so I'm very familiar with that struggle! I definitely would love to see more. Personally, I like Kutani with interesting forms/sculptural elements the most.

Thanks, Sharon! It's great to hear from you, too. I've only just truly settled into my new place, so hopefully, I'll get to go around antique shopping soon. I have a couple of new export pieces, but I'll share those later on 😋 Still looking into them!

@bartholin Thanks so much John. Actually, those first 2 vases are my favorite pieces as well. Both have exquisite small detail, much the way Peter described in his video about good Kutani, and about his vase in particular. When I try to imagine the amount of patience and the number of hours required to make such vases, I am awe-struck, and I never cease appreciating the effort that went into such effort! What I also find staggering is for that amount of work and talent, the prices are so relatively inexpensive. I am usually unable to afford much more than $500-$800 for a plate or vase, but in a few cases I have made exceptions, and those 2 vases were probably sold for “retail” prices, but well worth it to me. Peter agreed when I showed him each one. For what is left of my lifetime, I will enjoy those vases every day. One cannot easily put a price tag on that.
It sounds like perhaps you have moved to a bigger space now, and can more easily house your collection. My partner, who lives in the apartment next door, recently told me, half-jokingly that I’ve become a hoarder of Asian Antiques, because in fact my closet shelves are rather lined with my lesser favorites!😁

@charlotte - I agree! It was fun pulling into those photos to see how varied and finely detailed they were - I can only imagine the fun you must have, being able to examine them in person. They certainly remind me of Peter's Kutani vase. Unfortunately, I have moved to a smaller space, and had to relocate my collection and library of books. My parents graciously allowed me to display the collection in their home though 😋

I mostly collect Chinese export porcelain, but I love my little Kutani collection. These are some of what I have:

Bamboo 1 (1)
1860 1876 Watano Kutani Penholder (1)

Oh John, these look like rare pieces of Kutani! I do constant searches for Kutani, and have never seen plates with fish, an incense burner, or a seashell shaped piece. What a beautiful collection. I see how your love of form is so well represented here. Have you shown it to Georges Bouvier of Kutani.org? I’m sure he would appreciate posting these photos on his virtual gallery.

@bartholin By the way John, I can’t stop looking at those fish plates. Where did you find those, and were they super expensive, if you don’t mind sharing?

@charlotte Thank you!! I love the interesting forms. It's funny - the tureen is actually a bamboo shoot, but it's identified in one book as a squid. The second one is a pen holder, and includes a little repository for ink:

1860 1876 Watano Kutani Penholder (3)

I think I've shown the tureen and coffeepot to Georges, but not my latest teapot nor the penholder. I love the pair of fish plates - they were a bargain buy on eBay! 😎

@charlotte

My collection has a general maritime theme, so I toyed around with the idea of calling it "The Fish and Ships Collection" 😋

@charlotte Thanks, Charlotte! It's okay 🤣 I hunted that "squid" tureen for years before I finally got my hands on that one only to realize when it arrived that it was a bamboo shoot. The internal and external decorations and finial are all bamboo related, too! Nancy Schiffer's book misidentified it:

Book (1)
